**Position Summary**:
The Long Point Region Conservation Authority is seeking an independent, diligent and reliable individual for the position of Curator at Backus Heritage Conservation Area. Reporting to the General Manager, the Curator will be responsible for the care and protection of the artifact and archival collections, the coordination of exhibitions for the Backhouse Historic Site and the Conservation Education Center Galleries, along with the development, assessment and facilitation of Heritage and Outdoor Education programs for school classes. The Curator will supervise the Heritage Programmer, Outdoor Educator, Historic Site staff and volunteers. The Curator position is an annual 48-week contract.

**Qualifications**:

- Post-secondary education in a museum studies or public history program (or a related discipline)
- 2-year prior work experience in collections management and archives
- Working knowledge of the Standards for Community Museums in Ontario and the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums
- Prior experience in a living history setting an asset
- Experience delivering and developing Heritage and Outdoor Education Programming
- Strong computer literacy with prior experience in collections management databases and museum environmental monitoring software
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills
- Able to work effectively both independently and in a team environment
- Excellent written and oral communication and research skills
- Able to work in an outdoor and built heritage environment
- Must be available to work evenings, holidays and weekends as needed
- Clean Vulnerable Sector police check and valid Class G Ontario driver’s license required

**Responsibilities**:
**1. Collections Management & Conservation**
- Oversee and carry out all collections management and conservation duties for the permanent, working and education collections
- Oversee collections management including accessioning, cataloging, proper storage, research, donations, deaccession of artifacts and archival materials
- Manage preventative conservation of artifacts and historic site
- Develop and implement collections management training for staff and volunteers

**2. Interpretation and Exhibition Program**
- Seasonal opening and closing of historic site buildings
- Plan, implement, and take down the installation of permanent and temporary exhibits and period displays in the Heritage Buildings and the Conservation Education Centre at the beginning and end of operating season
- Event planning and development, scheduling, coordination, and execution of annual events within the Historic Site and Education Center throughout the summer and autumn seasons. Events such as Owl Prowl, Field to Flour, and the War of 1812

**3. Heritage and Outdoor Education Programs**
- Oversee the development, assessment and facilitation of Heritage and Outdoor Education Programming
- Work with Heritage Programmer and Outdoor Educator to coordinate the annual education program calendar
- Act as a point of contact for school board staff and other stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of Heritage and Outdoor Education programs
- Fill in as needed for the delivery of the Heritage or Outdoor Education Programs

**4. Staff and Volunteer Management**
- Recruit, train, supervise, and schedule volunteers and Backhouse Historic Site staff
- Train, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers who report to this position
- Coordinate communications for volunteers
- Schedule staff and volunteers

**5. Administration, Funding Requests and General**
- Update policies as required for museum operations
- Coordinate and prepare reports as required for Backus Museum Committee meetings
- General maintenance of the Education Center and Historic Site, assisting with building inspections, daily water samples and washroom cleaning and upkeep
- Ensure the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff, and protect the site's resources
- Other duties as assigned

**Location/Working Conditions**:

- Backus Heritage Conservation Area, Port Rowan, Ontario
- Hours of work: typically, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Evening and weekend work will be required in the summer season
- Indoor and outdoor working environment
- Public transportation to the site is unavailable
