Job Summary
Using an evidence-informed approach, curriculum consultants work collaboratively with department/faculty leadership, individual faculty and other support staff to design new or renew existing academic programs. Curriculum consultants collect and analyze data from multiple sources to make evidence-based recommendations regarding the development or renewal of academic programs. They provide strategic advice to department/faculty leadership, drawing on a deep understanding of diverse epistemologies, pedagogies, curriculum development models and methodologies utilized in Higher Education. This position supports various UBC strategic priorities which seek to improve student's educational experiences at UBC, with specific attention to students from equity-denied groups.
Organizational Status
The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) is a central academic service unit that provides leadership, academic services and support to the university community in the areas of teaching and learning scholarship, course and program development, learning design, educational technology development, instructional support, and teaching practice development. The Curriculum and Course Services team within the CTLT provides design, development and evaluation support for UBC courses, programs and other learning experiences.
Work Performed
- Curriculum and Program Development_- Develop and lead processes through which units identify and articulate mission, vision, goals and/or identity. Provide strategic recommendations throughout.- Make recommendations for how programs and courses can address UBC and departmental strategic plans, including the Indigenous Strategic Plan and other relevant plans, through curriculum.- Is attentive to the potential impact that curriculum design might have on program climate and/or student wellbeing; makes program design recommendations based on these considerations.- Work collaboratively with department/faculty leadership to develop program learning outcomes that reflect the uniqueness of the program and employ these as a framework for program design.- Consults with department/faculty leadership to determine pedagogical practices, assessment methods, engagement techniques, etc. that address their educational needs and improve the student learning experience. Advise and provide guidance to faculty incorporating these recommendations. Provide professional development and training as needed.- Design and facilitate curriculum retreats, workshops and other events. Provide recommendations regarding follow-up activities to department/faculty leadership. Evaluate the effectiveness of these efforts.- Support the development of Senate curriculum proposals, including supplementary materials such as syllabi.- Completes work in compliance with university, Ministry and accreditation body requirements; best practices and ethical guidelines; while considering equity and inclusion, decolonization, and accessibility.- May develop proposals, in collaboration with faculty proponents, to secure funding for program renewal or new program development. This includes preparing budgets, timelines and evaluation plans.
- Data collection and analysis_- Given the uniqueness of each program and the context in which it operates, identify data needed to inform program development and renewal.- Design and implement data collection analysis methods to identify gaps, redundancies and opportunities in existing curriculum and to improve alignment between individual courses and the larger program.
