With more than 50 years of service delivery, Catholic Social Services is one of the largest multi-function social services agencies in Canada, with more than 1600 staff, and hundreds of volunteers delivering 130+ programs throughout Edmonton and Central Alberta.
**Job Summary**:
The Maintenance Worker/Summer Student is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair for Catholic Social Services. This position completes general carpentry and electrical repair and maintenance work as required. The Maintenance Worker/Summer Student may also perform basic repairs and maintenance on the mechanical operating systems found within our Agency.
**About the Role**:
- Primary job duties include but are not limited to:
- Perform maintenance tasks of a routine nature in areas of carpentry, plumbing, heating, etc. as assigned
- Support the team with maintenance projects throughout the Agency.
- Coordinate entire process from assessing the work to be done, determining what materials are need, ordering the necessary material, picking up or arranging for delivery of materials, completing the job and cleanup of work site.
- Complete requested information reports, job completion reports, billing information and other required documentation in a timely manner
- Make Appropriate Decisions Regarding:
- The optimum course of action to be taken in completing an assignment;
- The undertaking of extra work not originally requested by the Program;
- The calling in of more experienced Technicians or an outside contractor when appropriate
- Act as a resource person to other staff members regarding means of avoiding maintenance problems or means of troubleshooting maintenance problems prior to involvement of maintenance staff.
- Represent the Agency in a professional and courteous manner
- Provide service and information in a courteous manner
- Be a positive, participatory team member; effectively communicating program concerns and possible solutions while establishing positive working relationships
- Operate Agency vehicle(s) in a safe and courteous manner, including regular service and repair of the vehicle(s)
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
**Education and Qualifications**:
- Completed Grade 12 or equivalent
- Basic knowledge, skill and work experience in: Carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, simple cement work, or other appropriate trade
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Vehicle Operating License
**Experience**:
- Prior general maintenance work preferred.
**Skills and Abilities**:
- Highly motivated and able to work independently.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing.
- Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
- Ability to maintain organization of maintenance schedule and files in a changing environment.
- Exhibit initiative, responsibility, flexibility and leadership.
- Ability to perform small repairs (e.g. caulking, replacing washers, and replacing light fixtures).
- Effective communication and problem solving skills
- Able to work well under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times.
**Working Conditions**:
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Travel to the site and off-site locations will be required
- Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
- Work both indoors and outdoors.
- May be exposed to construction sites.
