The City of Victoria’s Legislative Services Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Co-op Student to join our team for a work term. This is an excellent opportunity for a student studying Public Administration, Political Science, Law, or a related field to gain hands-on experience in local government operations, legislative processes, and governance.

As part of the Legislative Services team, you will support staff with research and analysis on municipal policies, bylaws, and regulations. This position is ideal for someone with a keen interest in public policy, governance, and the decision-making processes of local government. You’ll gain hands-on experience in municipal government operations, and a chance to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the community.

**POSITION FUNCTION**

As a student hired under the Co-operative Educational Training Program, you will be given meaningful and challenging assignments while being introduced to a career in municipal government. In this Co-op position you will assist with supernumerary projects and contribute to the overall goals of the work unit.

**KEY DUTIES**

Under the direct guidance and observation of the supervisor, assist with the on-going enhancement of the City’s operations by utilizing existing tools and software platforms.

Participate in the development and improvement of future-focussed projects that align with the department’s strategic goals and objectives by providing supernumerary field or office support.

Conduct and document research, analyze and interpret data, prepare summary of findings, draft reports, procedures and/or practices, and present to supervisor for feedback and/or next steps.

Assist with identifying and testing new and/or enhanced tools and processes and collaborate to ensure ‘shared learning’.

**INDEPENDENCE**

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

**KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

Working level knowledge of current City word processing, spreadsheet, and related specialty software including social media tools.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

**Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification**:
High School.

Enrolled in a recognized Co-operative Education Program at a Canadian Post-Secondary Institution.

Currently attending full-time education and returning to full-time studies in the subsequent academic year.

In good standing in an Undergraduate Degree Program or Technical School Diploma Program.

Not required.
