Settlement Workers in Schools

Reporting to the SWIS Program Director, this position's primary focus is to facilitate integration and settlement of newcomer families through systematic outreach to newly arrived families to Canada, assist in cross-cultural learning and guide families with information regarding available school and community resources.
**Hours of Work**: (1)hour per day, five days per week
**Duties to Commence**: As soon as possible after closing
**Work Base Year**: 10 Months per year
**Commencing Salary**: $28.19/hr
**Duties to be assigned include**:
Efficient organisational skills to develop and maintain schedules of support for families and schools.
Competent technology skills; Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, and Data Management.
Competent skills in research and resource/program development.
Leadership and facilitation skills (working with families, peer/community groups, school personnel, steering committees); organising and facilitating at least 10 deliverables/year
Flexible working hours to meet the needs of the newcomer families while creatively working within the structures of the school district, community supports, Ministry of Education and Ministry of the Attorney General's expectations (plus quarterly reporting timelines).
Commitment to collaboratively develop the SWIS program to help ensure ongoing support by the Ministry of Attorney General in future years.
Perform other job related duties as required.
**Qualifications**:
A minimum of 2 years social science background or equivalent, and 2 years recent experience (within 5 years) working in a multicultural setting with different ethnic groups
Knowledge of immigration polices, government agencies and support systems, and settlement issues
Strength and interest in public relations
Must be able to work as part of a team as well as independently and set priorities
Ability to manage difficult conversation in a professional manner
Knowledge of public school processes and operations K-12 would be an asset
Have an understanding of family and child development needs
Excellent communication (written and oral) and language skills
Fluency in English, and preferably one of more of the following languages: German, Russian, Romanian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean Filipino, Spanish, Amharic, Oromi
Valid B.C. driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle and the ability to travel to our newcomer families in Fort St John and surrounding district
Clean Driver's abstract
WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment
