The Lead Mechanical Insulator oversees and performs the installation, maintenance, and repair of insulation systems for HVAC, piping, and mechanical equipment. This role requires expertise in insulation materials, techniques, and Canadian safety standards, as well as leadership skills to manage a team and coordinate with other trades on project sites. The Lead Mechanical Insulator ensures all work meets industry standards, project specifications, and company quality expectations.Key Responsibilities
- Insulation Installation & Maintenance:

- Apply, repair, and maintain insulation materials on pipes, ducts, HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, and other mechanical equipment to prevent heat loss, condensation, or noise.
- Select appropriate insulation materials (e.g., fiberglass, foam, mineral wool) based on project requirements and Ottawa’s climate conditions.
- Fabricate and install protective coverings, such as metal jacketing or vapor barriers, to ensure durability and compliance with specifications.
- Team Leadership & Supervision:

- Lead and mentor a team of mechanical insulators, providing guidance on techniques, safety protocols, and project goals.
- Assign tasks, monitor progress, and ensure team members meet quality and productivity standards.
- Conduct training and onboarding for new insulators to maintain a skilled workforce.
- Project Coordination:

- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other trades (e.g., plumbers, electricians) to ensure seamless integration of insulation work into overall project timelines.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications to plan insulation installation.
- Communicate with clients and stakeholders to address concerns and ensure satisfaction.
- Safety & Compliance:

- Enforce strict adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) of Ontario, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) regulations, and company safety policies.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and toolbox talks to maintain a safe work environment.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of insulation materials, including hazardous materials like asbestos, in compliance with Ontario Regulation 278/05 (Asbestos on Construction Projects).
- Quality Control & Documentation:

- Inspect completed work to ensure it meets project specifications, Ontario Building Code (OBC), and client expectations.
- Maintain accurate records of materials used, labor hours, and project progress.
- Report any issues or deviations from plans to the project manager promptly.

**Qualifications**:

- Experience:

- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a mechanical insulator, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- Proven track record in HVAC and mechanical insulation projects (commercial and/or industrial preferred) in Ottawa or similar climates.
- Education & Certifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a recognized apprenticeship program (e.g., Heat and Frost Insulator - 253A trade certification) is preferred.
- Valid Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) as a Heat and Frost Insulator in Ontario is strongly preferred.
- Certification in Asbestos Abatement (Type 1, 2, or 3) per Ontario Regulation 278/05 is highly desirable.
- Valid Working at Heights certification (per Ontario Regulation 213/91).
- WHMIS 2015 (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certification.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (required for use of company truck).
- Skills & Abilities:

- Strong leadership and communication skills to manage teams and interact with clients.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in problem-solving and adapting to project-specific challenges, including Ottawa’s seasonal temperature extremes.
- Physical stamina to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying environmental conditions.
