Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.

The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.

In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

NATURE OF POSITION:
Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor of Ground Services, the Orientation Clinical Development Paramedic shall be responsible for supporting Clinical Services programs within the EHS system to promote the delivery of safe and effective care. With a focus on orientation and mentorship, this role will support the clinical process within EMC’s hiring philosophy and orientation of staff within the ground ambulance service and Integrated Health Programs. As such, the incumbent shall be responsible for, but not limited to, organization, administration and facilitation of the screening and orientation processes, as well as supporting the development of mentorship programs. The Orientation CDP shall work in close collaboration with Clinical Services, Risk Management and Patient Safety, Human Resources, System Performance and Operations Divisions to ensure the success and sustainability of the orientation and mentorship programs. In addition to providing oversight of various aspects of the onboarding process, the incumbent may also be assigned to special projects related to recruitment and the new hire process, including sitting on working groups, committees and participating in other activities as required.

The CDP must have a broad knowledge of EHS clinical care, including EHS clinical policy, protocol and procedures, have good organizational and computer skills and are able to work on their own with little supervision.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIPILITIES:
The position entails, but is not limited to, the following:

- Develop and facilitate clinical-based orientation education, including didactic, procedural skills and simulation
- Schedule orientation sessions and facilitators for evaluation and/or orientation activity
- Provide ongoing support to new employees of EMC
- Provide support for recruitment, orientation and mentorship for the Medical Communications Centre and LifeFlight as required
- Support the EMC organization-wide mentorship program
- Collaborate with Clinical Services, Human Resources and Operations to develop, implement, review, deliver and maintain screening requirements, orientation curriculum and mentorship programs
- Coordinate the utilization of clinical training and operations resources required to support the evaluation and orientation process
- Work with Operations and Clinical Services to place new employees for field orientation sessions
- Conduct and monitor program evaluation and feedback surveys regarding screening, orientation and mentorship to determine areas for improvement
- Design and develop curriculum using adult education principles
- Track and report trends to Clinical Services leadership and seminal education programs on screening and orientation data
- Participate in committees and working groups related to recruitment, onboarding and mentorship processes
- Support preceptorship activity
- Support the delivery of other Clinical Services led education, such as elective education, prescribed in-services, and M&Ms
- Conduct clinical audits
- Advance the culture of provider and patient safety within the EHS system
- Participate in continuous professional development associated with the position
- Support accreditation processes
- Promote a safe and inclusive environment
