**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
Reporting to the Manager, Public and Patient Research Engagement, in the Research and Capacity Building Department and working in close collaboration with other members of the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) BC Support for People and Patient Oriented Research Trials SUPPORT Unit (SUPPORT Unit) Vancouver Island Centre, the Leader, Public and Patient Research Engagement is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating Patient-Oriented Research (POR) public and patient engagement activities across the Island Health region. The Lead works with key internal and external SPOR stakeholders, including patients, researchers, clinicians, policy makers, and decision-makers.
Patient-Oriented Research is research that engages patients as partners and focuses on patient-identified priorities to improve patient experience, health outcomes and the health system.
Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Master's degree in a related discipline such as health sciences, community development, social work or health management AND five years of experience in program evaluation, community capacity building, or a related discipline, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Training in public engagement and facilitation mandatory. Training in cultural safety and equity, diversity, and inclusion considered assets.
**Skills And Abilities**:
- Strong knowledge/understanding of the BC and Canadian health care systems and health research landscape
- Experience in the conduct of research an asset
- Strong knowledge and understanding of public engagement strategies and methods (e.g., International Association of Public Participation - Planning and Techniques certification)
- Project management experience preferably across the full spectrum of planning, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation
- Ability to work with First Nations, minority groups, and marginalized and vulnerable populations
- Proven ability to speak in public is mandatory and ability to communicate effectively with those who are not experts
- Excellent communication, including listening, writing and talking
- Ability to develop and foster relationships and partnerships
- Skilled at negotiation, conflict management and consensus building
- Innovative, creative, flexible and adaptable
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently under mínimal supervision as well as part of a team
- Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and online meeting software
- Valid BC Driver's License
- Willingness to travel provincially and nationally
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the job
