- As a Community Peace Officer, you will educate citizens and encourage compliance with respect to municipal bylaws and provincial acts including the Community Standards Bylaw and the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw. Primary duties include:
- Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, special interest groups, and citizens to identify emerging issues and work collaboratively to reach successful and sustainable outcomes in regards to areas of concern.
- Proactively interact with citizens during patrols and community and special events. Provide information geared towards a positive citizen experience through engagement, education, and compliance.
- Collaborate with internal and external parties.
- Investigate and resolve bylaw complaints originating from the public, City Council and other business units.
- Prepare file documentation, photograph scenes as necessary for evidence, conduct interviews and perform other related investigative functions.
- Attend Provincial Court as a Crown witness on violations and criminal matters as required.
**Qualifications**
- A high school diploma or equivalency (e.g., GED) with additional job related coursework and at least 5 years investigative experience with a focus on community problem solving in a public safety or law enforcement profession or similar occupation with strong emphasis on public service and addressing a wide range of community concerns and or dilemmas, OR;
- A completed 2 year diploma in a related field with at least 2 years of investigative experience as noted above, OR;
- A degree in a related field with at least 1 year of investigative experience as noted above.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- The ability to hold the appointments of a Bylaw Enforcement Officer and Community Peace Officer Level 1.
- Current Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level 'C', and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
- Strong conflict resolution and mediation skills, demonstrated problem solving ability and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations in high stress or emotional environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, diplomacy, customer service focus and the ability to build strong partnerships and trust within the community.
**Working Conditions**:This position is psychologically and physically demanding and requires direct contact with domestic animals.
**Pre-employment Requirements**
- An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
- Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
- Applicants must meet the provincial standard on the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE), Correctional Officer Physical Aptitude Test (COPAT), Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) or Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) physical fitness test prior to consideration.
**Note**:Successful applicants will be required to complete a comprehensive training program in order to hold a Community Peace Officer appointment.
**Pre-employment Drug Test**: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
