WHAT YOU’LL DO: This is an exciting opportunity to have meaningful impact on the delivery of care at Vancouver Coastal Health. The psychiatrist position will be based in Vancouver General Hospital Concurrent Disorder Inpatient Unit at Segal 8. This unit a 20 bed psychiatric inpatient ward at Segal 8. It accommodates 60- 70% patients with acute substance induced mental health exacerbations or substance use and alcohol as a comorbidity. It also accommodates general adult psychiatric patients. It offers excellence in clinical care based on the best available evidence and treatment tailored to each person’s individual needs. The clinical program integrates biological treatments (pharmacotherapy, ECT and Psychotherapy). The Psychiatrist will report to the Head and Medical Director, Department of Psychiatry, Vancouver Acute through the Medical Manager, Inpatient Services. In accordance with the standards of practice and the established vision and values of Vancouver Coastal Health, the psychiatrist who accepts this position will evaluate, diagnose and provide state-of-the-art, specialized inpatient treatment for patients of ages 17 and up suffering from wide spectrum of serious psychiatric disorders. The psychiatrist will serve as a resource in dealing with mental health issues and symptom management with a strong knowledge base in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. The psychiatrist will also be involved in innovative treatment interventions and will participate in the training and education of medical students, residents and other allied health professionals. The psychiatrist should have a good knowledge of Community resources. The common sense and good judgement to ‘make the call’ or understand the risks associated with certain decisions and able to work well under pressure. Hours The psychiatrist will provide a 5 day per week half time and there are opportunities to work in more than one team as needed. He will be initially responsible for managing 4 acute concurrent disorder patients at a time with the expectation to provide cover for colleague’s vacation. Compensation Blend of BC MSP fee-for-service and sessional funds; physicians are responsible for their own billings.
