Position Summary
- The Charge Technician (HIM) for Health Information Management (Coding) is responsible for day to day oversight of the Coding and Abstracting of all modalities, quality management duties, clinical documentation initiatives as well as performing coding functions.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Working in a hybrid environment with a minimum of 3 shifts per week onsite, the Charge Technician performs coding and abstracting as required with excellence.
- Assists in the day to day management of the Health Information Management (Coding) area and liaises with Health Records, Decision Support, Finance and Physician stakeholders to implement new, improved practice changes, and resolve quality issues as they are identified.
- Develops monthly Coding completion documents to ensure timely completion to achieve external CIHI and Ontario Health data submission deadlines.
- Co-lead Coding Huddles with Manager Health Records
- Ability to motivate and lead team members with integrity, self-awareness and compassion
- Responsible for the orientation of students and new staff to the Coding department and quality management system.
- Performs competency and productivity assessments of existing staff in accordance with departmental practices.
- Assists Manager in recruitment process for Health Information Management Professionals
- Develops and implements training plans for all new HIM team members
- Collaborates with Medical Affairs and Physician groups in the development and implementation of clinical documentation initiatives
- Coordinating preventative maintenance, troubleshooting equipment and maintaining records on all Coding associated software and equipment.
- Collaborates with the Manager Health Records, Decision Support and external bodies to monitor and maintain the quality management system, investigate and document quality issues and ensure continuous quality improvement activities are ongoing.
- Performs required daily, weekly, monthly and yearly productivity and quality audits and documents and actions on audit results.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures consistent with current health information management best practice standards.
- Facilitates, coordinates and records the communication of practice changes in the Health Information Management (Coding) area that ensures prompt and consistent coding of OSMH patient records.
- Actively pursues personal development and self-awareness training.
- Maintains coding competence by actively participating in continuing education on a yearly basis.
- Support and demonstrate the mission and vision of the hospital in his/her relations with patients, staff and the general public.
- Works in compliance with the Health & Safety Act and it’s regulations in performing duties in a safe manner and follows all health and safety policies, procedures and legislation including wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Participates in long range planning, organizational committees and working groups as assigned.
- Active participation in department huddles, meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
- Developing and maintaining good working relationships with staff, physicians, volunteers and patients.
- Actively contributes to a positive continuous quality improvement culture within the Health Records Department

Performs other duties as assigned by Health Information Management Leadership.

**Qualifications**:

- Education:

- Graduate of an approved course for Health Information Management Professionals as recognized by the Hospital is required.
- A member in good standing with the Canadian Health Information Management Association is required.
