The Child Life Worker will provide child life services based on an assessment of the patient's developmental and individual needs, strengths and available psychosocial supports. The Child Life Worker strives to promote optimum development of children, adolescents and families to maintain normal living patterns and to minimize psychological strain while in hospital.

Accountabilities:

- Assessing the developmental level, psychosocial and emotional responses of the child to hospitalization and illness
- Developing and implementing a range of developmentally appropriate services to promote coping, optimum development and normal life experiences during hospitalization
- Preparing children for medical procedures and providing coping interventions during procedures
- Mentoring and education for the multidisciplinary team related to child growth and development and coping strategies around hospitalization and/or the operative experience
- Participating in ongoing oral and written interdisciplinary communication
- Provide in-service and community education as requested
- Maintaining involvement in multidisciplinary committees and other service related tasks
- Integrating research into practice and creating, utilizing and/or disseminating new knowledge

**Qualifications**
- Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child and family studies, psychology or related field or Master's degree with child life courses
- Current certification from the Child Life Council or eligibility and willingness to obtain and successfully complete certification within one year
- Knowledge of infant, child and adolescent growth and development
- Minimum one year of experience working with infants, children and adolescents in a health care setting is an asset
- Ability to perform work duties independent of other child life staff
- Demonstrated ability to work in an inter-professional team
- Must demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and Collaboration
