Advancement Officer

Reporting to the Director, Advancement, this position is responsible for developing and maintaining prospect and donor relationships in an assigned territory for the University.
Other principle accountabilities include playing an important role in achieving approved fundraising objectives within the overall fund development plan of the University, representing NOSM University’s fundraising efforts to both the internal and external community with particular emphasis on the communities of Sudbury and Thunder Bay, as well as other identified communities within Northern Ontario.
This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.
**Responsibilities**:
Tasks may include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist with all aspects of the University’s fund development goals and strategic fundraising plans.
- Build and develop relationships with high-potential donors and prospects, as well as with external businesses and regional organizations.
- Research, write, and submit strong and compelling grant proposals to foundations and corporations as well as manage these relationships and report on existing grants.
- Maintain a portfolio of active leadership and major gift level prospects to cultivate and solicit for gifts to support initiatives of the University.
- Research and track donor priorities.
- Work with, extract information from, and prepare financial and statistical summary reports and analyses from information generated by fundraising information management system.
- With the NOSM U Advancement Unit, develops and implements strategies for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects to achieve annual financial targets.
- Coordinates prospect/donor calls, makes visits and ensures all necessary follow-up including correspondence to donors, contact reports, and drafting of terms and conditions for donations.
- Develops and implements, in concert with the Advancement Unit a stewardship strategy for individual donors, including gift announcements, donor cultivation/recognition events, and reports to donors on progress and outcomes of fundraising projects they have supported with a view to strengthening those relationships.
- Work with other NOSM U units to support sponsorship requirements for events held internally.
- Accurately track, collect and use donor information, and assure the maintenance of confidentiality and privacy of this information.
- Participate in special fundraising activities and events for the University.
- Establish a relationship within the collegial network of fundraising professionals and establish a presence as a participant in the profession at professional conferences and involvement with professional associations.
- Prepare correspondence and proposals in support of approved Advancement initiatives.
- Represent NOSM U at external events, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- A University degree in a related field (e.g. Public Relations, Business, Communications) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Membership with the Association for Fundraising Professionals an asset.
- Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) an asset.
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Minimum of three (3) years of direct fundraising experience in mid to large level donations is required.
- Knowledge of major resource development methodologies
- Experience with foundation, corporate, and individual fundraising programs and experience leading special events
- Demonstrated experience securing mid
- to large-level individual gifts and/or sponsorships
- Demonstrated fundraising success
- Experience with business development, specifically writing technical funding proposals for a variety of potential funding sources including private sector, provincial and federal levels
- Proven project management and time management skills
- Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Ability to research and analyze diverse information quickly and accurately in line with donor requirements and NOSM’s priorities, mission, and approaches
- Experience working in a distributed environment
- Experience working with Francophone and Indigenous individuals, organizations and communities
- Knowledge of the university environment and experience working with a variety of different administrative levels
- Knowledge of volunteer management practices
- Ability to work with confidential and/or sensitive information and/or situations
- Ability to work within established organizational practices, protocols and policies.
- Knowledge of marketing and print production is an asset
