Relief Developmental Support Worker

**SUMMARY**:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Relief Developmental Support Worker is assigned to replace employees on an as needed basis or to provide services during a short-term high intensity care period.
The Relief Developmental Support Worker provides support, structure and supervision in personal care routines, life skills and education to individuals with a developmental disability.
Through a team approach and the use of relevant community experiences and resources, the Relief Developmental Support Worker establishes and maintains an enriched and supportive environment for individuals in order to maximize their potential for development and improve their quality of life.
Establishes and maintains professional relationships with individuals, families, OCAPDD program staff, other agencies and the community in general.
The Relief Developmental Support Worker reports on the condition of building, property, furnishings, supplies and equipment.
**ACCOUNTABILITY**:
The Relief Developmental Support Worker reports to and is accountable to the Program Manager.
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:
Developmental Services Worker (DSW) diploma, Social Service Worker (SSW) diploma, Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate, or Community College Diploma or University Degree in human services.
**COMPETENCIES**:
- Effective oral, written and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows environment and of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possess current certification in First Aid.
- Possess current certification or willingness to obtain certification in CPI.
- Ability to assist with lifts/transfers of wheelchair-dependent individuals.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs (18 kgs).
- Knowledge of Health and Safety (H&S) responsibilities, commitment to participate in health and safety activities and attend relevant Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Advocate for individuals’ rights and treat all individuals with respect and dignity.
- Provide support in areas of personal hygiene, meal preparation, house cleaning, daily personal/social living skills, leisure/recreation activities, vocational skills and personal finances, according to individual needs.
- Administer medication to individuals in accordance with the medication administration procedure.
- Enter data base notes of relevant daily occurrences and contacts with families/guardians, health professionals and other community resources/services.
- Carry out established programs of routines/activities in the program/community.
- Assist with implementing program routines/activities, in the Program/community in consultation with co-workers and the Supervisor.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure program continuity.
- Participate in supervision with the Program Supervisor.
- Maintain professional relationships.
- Communicate information in accordance with OCAPDD/Open Hands' confidentiality procedures.
- Share the responsibility for keeping the workplace secure, neat, clean and safe.
- Report any unhealthy or unsafe condition of building, property, furnishings, supplies and equipment to the Health and Safety Steward and/or the Program Supervisor.
- Comply with Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and health and safety policies, procedures and practices, and exhibit a proactive attitude toward accident prevention.
- Adhere to OCAPDD/Open Hands' policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as required.
