Underground Fiber-optic Cable Technician
**Responsibilities**:
- Identify existing underground utilities, such as buried cables and pipes.
- Investigate the soil condition, in order to determine the installation depth, whether duct should be used, the type of fiber cable that should be used and plowing equipment needed.
- Keep the trenches as straight as possible.
- Pull, route, or label Fiber
- Install various support structures, including innerduct, and other related structures
- Communicate and collaborate with other members of the field service team to resolve complex issues
- Provide high-quality service
Underground Fiber-optic Cable Technician Requirements and Qualifications
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
1. Locates buried facilities near the route of service wire using appropriate equipment.
2. Place buried service wires using a manually controlled gasoline/diesel powered tractor/trencher, plow, boring machine or manual tools.
3. Coordinates work activity with customers.
4. Provides repairs to low voltage buried utilities, sprinkler systems, and sewage field lines damaged while performing other duties.
5. Provides periodic maintenance and non-complex repairs to equipment used in performance of other responsibilities.
6. Lifts and moves objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
7. Excavates using a shovel.
8. Reads and interprets simple instructions.
9. Follows established safety practices and procedures including the manufacture's specifications for operation or use of equipment.
Training:
On-the-job and/or classroom training as required.
Other Requirements:
Satisfactory completion of a background investigation.
Valid driver's license.
GENERAL WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Normally work Monday through Friday with overtime and weekend work as required.
Work outside in all kinds of weather and use various manually controlled machines or tools.
Lifts and moves objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 6+ months of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing cable for network communications
- Some knowledge of industry standard cable specifications
- Communication skills with the ability to successfully collaborate with other members of the team
