A cleaner is generally responsible for cleaning work including dusting of offices, vacuuming, the cleaning of all hard floor surfaces, washrooms, and the collection and removal of garbage from drop points to a garbage bin.

Both training time and practice time is required before a heavy duty cleaner will become fully proficient in the use of the required tools and machinery. Machines require a learned technique before they can be operated proficiently. Some chemicals must be mixed and/or diluted according to instructions on the containers.

To become fully competent in the execution of the job about 3 months on the job training is required.
- Dry mops, wet mop (wash/scrub) and polishes hard surface floors
- Strips and finishes hard surface floors manually or with power equipment when required.
- Transports garbage from drop points to garbage bins or compactor. The heavy duty cleaner will operate the compactor.
- Transports maintenance machinery, where necessary, between floors and job sites.
- Check high dusting, vents and other horizontal surfaces
- Full clean mirrors, dispensers, all bright work, counters, faucets, flushometers, toilet seat hinges, etc.
- Replenish all washroom supplies including: hand towels, toilet paper, hand soap and sanitary napkins
- Empty all waste containers. Wash and sanitize thoroughly. Reline containers and remove waste to designated area.
- Spot clean all doors, kick plates, and walls. Remove fingerprint marks and smudges from all vertical surfaces.
- Cleans stairwells and elevator cabs where ladders are required.
