The Arborist is responsible for the care, maintenance, and preservation of trees and woody plants throughout the Town of Coaldale. This role ensures the health, safety, and aesthetic value of the Town’s urban forest by carrying out arboricultural practices including pruning, removal, planting, and disease management. The Arborist provides technical expertise, supports the Parks team, and ensures compliance with industry standards and municipal policies.

**COMPENSATION**
- 2025 wage range: $37.99 / hour to $41.51 / hour
- $3/hour shift premium for evenings and weekends
- 100% employer paid health and dental benefit premiums (excluding LTD) after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period
- $1000 annual health spending account
- Opportunity for a 5.75% increase effective January 1, 2026
- Opportunity for a 5.75% increase effective January 1, 2027

**TERM**
- This is a temporary position, with an expected Term of (2)-years.

**JOB DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Inspect, maintain, prune, and remove trees and woody vegetation in parks, boulevards, cemeteries, and other public spaces.
- Plant, establish, and provide aftercare for new trees across the community.
- Diagnose tree health issues, including pest infestations and diseases, and implement corrective treatments.
- Operate and maintain specialized arboriculture equipment such as chainsaws, chippers, climbing gear, aerial lifts, and rigging systems.
- Respond to storm damage, hazardous tree conditions, and emergency call-outs to ensure public safety.
- Maintain accurate records of tree care activities and assist in inventory management of the Town’s urban forest.
- Assist in developing and implementing tree management and replacement plans.
- Provide technical advice to Parks leadership and contribute to long-term urban forestry planning.
- Ensure compliance with Town safety regulations, ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) standards, and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- Perform other arboricultural duties as required.

**REQUIREMENTS**
- ISA Certified Arborist designation preferred.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in arboriculture or urban forestry.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License; Class 3 with Air Brakes endorsement considered an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of tree biology, pest/disease management, and safe climbing techniques.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain arborist tools and equipment.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Pesticide Applicator License.
- Experience with GIS tree inventory systems.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and precipitation.
- Regular climbing and work at heights using ropes, harnesses, and aerial lift devices.
- Exposure to noise, dust, insects, chemicals, and potentially hazardous trees.
- Physical effort required, including lifting up to 75 lbs., bending, and working in awkward positions.
- Normal working day consists of 8 hours; overtime, weekend, or emergency response may be required.

- Ensure all operations are performed in a safe manner and in accordance with the Town of Coaldale policies, as well as the law as set forth by Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required at all times as per safe job procedures.
