The Safety Trainer's responsibilities are to assist in the development, teaching and monitoring of safety training programs for Irving Shipbuilding employees at all locations (Halifax Shipyards, Bluenose, Woodside, Marine Fabricators). The Trainer is also responsible for maintaining equipment certifications for all sites.
This role is responsible for supporting overall training effectiveness through optimizing our Learning & Development systems, submitting training records for all employees, and ensuring that all curriculum is delivered in a fashion that will allow the workforce to retain the required knowledge to pass the certification test and perform work safely in production.
This individual will be one of the first points of contact for new hires at ISI. This includes Local 1, Staff (all levels), subcontractors, and the customer (DND) as they will also be responsible for subcontractor orientations. They will be responsible for supervising up to 20 people during onboarding.
During training the instructor is responsible for employee’s health and safety by ensuring compliance with all HSE work instructions.
The instructor will need to ensure they are aware of any changes to the applicable CSA standard to adjust their training accordingly so that ISI maintains its compliance for this training.

- Education:
- Completion of a post-secondary education (Diploma or Degree)
- Trades Red Seal certification an asset
- SJA First Aid Train the trainer considered an asset
- 3m Fall Pro, Confined Space and fit test train the trainer preferred
- CSA Qualified Equipment train the trainer course
- Experience: 3-5 years’ related experience
- Experience operating forklifts, MEWP's, Skid Steers, Payloaders, SPMTs and other equipment
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with all levels of leadership and union
- All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)._
- Prepare documentation and supplies for training session
- Deliver course material and understand different learning styles to ensure course content is understood and the minimum requirements are met (passing grade on the test is achieved)
- New Hire Safety Orientation: Supervise group for full week
- Responsible for safety and pay
- New Hire Coaching sessions and audits
