Position Summary

Reporting to the Team Leader, the Community Disability Support Worker provides direct, person-centered support to individuals with developmental disabilities in home, community, and potentially, in care settings. Rooted in the values of Gentle Teaching, this role focuses on building safe, trusting relationships while promoting inclusion, dignity, and self-expression. Support Workers are key partners in helping individuals live full, meaningful lives, with emphasis on advocacy, skill-building, independence, and emotional well-being in alignment with accreditation standards and Gentle Teaching philosophy.

Key Responsibilities

1. Person-Centered Support & Implementation
- Establish and maintain a safe, trusting, and supportive relationship with supported individuals.
- Implement individualized support plans that reflect the individual’s goals, needs, routines, and preferences.
- Participate in the development and updating of the individuals’ Comprehensive Support Plan.
- Encourage choice-making, self-expression, and participation in planning personal activities.
- Provide emotional presence and companionship rooted in gentleness, compassion, and respect.

2. Community Integration & Social Participation
- Facilitate access to meaningful activities such as employment, volunteering, recreation, and education.
- Support the development of natural supports and meaningful social connections within the community.
- Accompany individuals to appointments, programs, and social events

3. Skill Development & Interdependence
- Teach and support daily living skill development including cooking, cleaning, shopping, and budgeting.
- Promote personal responsibility, self-determination, and goal achievement through mentorship.
- Support communication using the individual's preferred methods, including assistive technologies.
- Promote self-advocacy and assist individuals in expressing needs and preferences.

4. Relational Support and Emotional Wellness
- Implement Positive Support strategies that uphold dignity, safety, and respect.
- Recognize triggers and coping strategies, and document behavioural observations accurately.
- Support co-regulation and emotional safety in a non-punitive, trauma-informed manner.

5. Health, Safety & Personal Care
- Assist with hygiene, grooming, dressing, transfers, and mobility as needed.
- Administer medications and follow health care protocols under proper training.
- Monitor and report health concerns and respond to emergencies according to policy.
- Promote a safe environment through proactive risk management and harm reduction.

6. Home Environment & Household Support
- Support individuals in maintaining a clean, organized, and personalized living space.
- Participate in household tasks such as meal preparation, laundry, and light cleaning.
- Encourage pride, ownership, and engagement in the home environment.

7. Advocacy & Rights Promotion
- Educate individuals about their rights and responsibilities.
- Act as an advocate when needed, ensuring the individual’s voice and preferences are respected.
- Collaborate with families, guardians, and interdisciplinary professionals to ensure holistic support.

8. Communication & Documentation
- Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation of daily activities, interactions, health, and goal progress.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with coworkers, families, and stakeholders.
- Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and individual support planning processes.

9. Policy Compliance & Professional Conduct
- Follow all agency and regulatory policies regarding privacy, safety, abuse prevention, and ethics.
- Report safety concerns, suspected abuse, or neglect in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, established protocols and policy.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and accountability in all interactions.

Qualifications & Skills

1. Education
- High school diploma or an equivalent.

- Relevant post secondary education in Human Services

2. Experience
- Experience in community support, disability services, home care, or related social services is an asset.
- Knowledge or experience in trauma-informed care, person centered practice, Gentle Teaching, or inclusive practices is considered beneficial

3.Physical & Other Requirements
- Flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Comfortable with physical tasks including mobility assistance, personal care, and use of assistive devices.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable vehicle is an asset (if required).
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

**Job Type**: Casual

Pay: $18.08-$24.39 per hour
