Located in the heart of the Niagara Region - just minutes from one of the world’s most well-known tourism destinations - Niagara College offers more than 130 innovative programs between our campuses in Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Since opening its doors in 1967, Niagara College has grown to become a leader in education and training and one of the most enterprising colleges in Canada.
Applications are invited for the position of Student Rights & Responsibilities Specialist (SRRS) in the Student Services Division, located at the Daniel J Patterson Campus in Niagara on the Lake. This position is a temporary 2 year Term Certain role and approximate dates of the appointment are September 2024 through August 2026. The salary range is $85,529 to $106,911 for a 35 hour work week position with some travel between campuses required. Additional hours may be required as necessary.
Reporting to the Director, Student Rights & Responsibilities Office, the Student Rights & Responsibilities Specialist (SRRS) is responsible for investigations of non-academic student issues (as outlined in the College’s Student Code of Conduct Policy and Procedures) including sexual violence investigations, and investigations for the Behaviour Intervention Team (BIT). The incumbent will address student behaviour in a developmental/educational manner with the goal of fostering the basis for good citizenship which includes civility, responsibility and respect. The incumbent will work closely with the Director to research and develop policies and processes that will reflect the needs of Niagara College.
The SRRS conducts investigations where violations of the Student Code of Conduct may have taken place. In some cases, the investigation may reveal that the case requires special intervention and a referral to BIT. The SRRS thoroughly investigates all non-academic behavioural incidents, documents all aspects of the cases, interviews all parties involved and consults with the Director to makes decisions regarding sanctions. The incumbent will also provide workshops and seminars to the college community regarding all aspects of Students Rights and Responsibilities and the associated disciplinary processes.
**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:
- Investigating and managing complex non-academic student incident reports for behaviours which include, but are not limited to disturbances, verbal and physical aggression, unwanted contact and communication, alcohol and drug violations, threats and weapons.
- Ensuring appropriate, thorough investigations are conducted -including interviews and statements from any involved parties and striving to complete investigations within the timelines outlined in the Student Code of Conduct Policy.
- Providing communication and effective analysis regarding sensitive student issues with Senior Administration, Deans, faculty, staff and students, ensuring confidentiality.
- Ensuring and is accountable for management of student discipline records as well as the safeguarding of personal and confidential information.
- Developing and presenting workshops and training for the College community on student rights and responsibilities, student code of conduct, student disciplinary processes and conflict resolution techniques.
**Qualifications**:
- Four (4) Year degree in Criminal Justice, Education, Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or a similar field of study.
- A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in criminal justice, student conduct, student advocacy, and/or other related areas.
- Knowledge of and experience with due process, rights and responsibilities applicable to student judicial work, trends related to student conduct and student at risk procedures within post-secondary environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to the enhancement and promotion of diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
- Sound knowledge of legislation pertaining to the post-secondary educational environment, such as: Mental Health Act of Ontario, Bill 132-Sexual Violence and
- Harassment Action Plan Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Criminal Code, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Acts.
- Knowledge and experience with investigating sexual violence cases using a trauma informed approach.
- Knowledge of the Canadian judicial system (e.g. conditions, orders, police, courts, victim services, SASV centres) to navigate services.
- Sound knowledge of case management including an understanding of student conduct review processes.
- Excellent oral, written, analytical and problem-solving skills.
