Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.
Job Summary
The Research Engagement Strategist is a key role in bridging the gap between UBC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) and the research community, ensuring that researchers are fully supported in their utilization of advanced computing resources. The key responsibility of this role is to develop and execute an outreach strategy with the research community to increase awareness and usage of existing ARC services and products and identify new opportunities to improve research workflows through continuous learning and monitoring of industry developments. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in promoting ARC services, developing and facilitating training sessions, and providing personalized support to enhance research productivity and innovation across both UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses and affiliated institutions.
To ensure success, the Research Engagement Strategist will cultivate and maintain strong relationships with faculties, departments, research laboratories, and external partners, including the Digital Research Alliance of Canada and provincial government agencies involved in AI-related initiatives. This position requires strategic engagement, technical understanding, and the ability to translate complex advanced research computing solutions into practical research applications.
Organizational Status
The Research Engagement Strategist reports to the ARC Manager, Research Innovation Solutions Engagement (RISE). The Research Engagement Strategist works with other UBC departments at all campuses and research institutes, as well as partner organizations nationally and internationally including provincial and federal government, to support research services and ensure UBC researchers have access to secure, state-of-the-art digital research infrastructure required for computationally and data intensive research.
This position will work closely with colleagues and technical, administrative, and scientific staff to support advanced research computing.
Work Performed
Specific Duties:
Develop & Execute Outreach Strategies
Develop community-focused outreach initiatives to increase the visibility and adoption of UBC ARC services and products across UBC's research landscape including hosting workshops, service overview presentations, email campaigns, and presenting at conferences.
Consultative Engagement & Support
Act as the go-to expert for researchers looking to understand ARC's product suite
Guide researchers through best practices in integrating ARC solutions into their workflows
Identify New Opportunities
Keep up to date on trends in advanced research computing and academic research, identifying opportunities to enhance workflows or introduce new products and services
Collaborate with researchers and internal teams to pilot innovative approaches that streamline research processes and reduce time to discovery
Stakeholder and Relationship Management
Build and nurture relationships with faculties and departments, research labs, external service partners including the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, the national HPC (High-Performance Computing) and research platform, and the provincial government on AI-related initiatives
Act as a liaison between the research community and UBC ARC's technical teams, ensuring feedback from end-users to inform ongoing product development and service enhancements
Performance Tracking & Reporting
Develop metrics to gauge the impact of outreach efforts and consultative engagements
Report on key outcomes and propose incremental improvements to strategies based on operational data and user feedback from events
Training & workshops
Organize and lead training sessions, webinars, and informational workshops with other internal team members to help researchers leverage UBC ARC resources effectively
Develop educational materials that simplify concepts and showcase the tangible benefits of advanced research computing tools
Core Duties:
Leads the analysis of a campus-wide technology research service or information technology services, translates client organizational needs and makes recommendations for optimizing resources and delivery of services.
Works with service owners to develop implementation plans, policies and standards, and budgets for projects and information technology solutions.
Identifies implementation options, evaluates risks and benefits of various options and discusses approach and recommendations with staff and research stakeholders.
Works collaboratively with vendors, researchers and ARC staff members to plan and deliver ARC's portfolio of services to the UBC research community.
Monitors and evaluates the quality of services delivered by reviewing and analyzing performance metrics and reports and ensures related goals are met.
Advises other information technology professionals and senior leaders on the effective use of specific research platforms and services.
Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
Performs other related duties as required.
Develops working relationships across the organization.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in the implementation and support of advanced research computing systems could cost the University many hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost productivity in research time and could impact the timely delivery of services to research community [e.g., faculty, staff, students, and the public]. Poor management or improper decisions could compromise the success of ARC efficiencies and have a negative impact on the credibility of the portfolio and the reputation of the university. Errors in implementation and support leading to breaches of security involving research systems or data could compromise the privacy and confidentiality of research subjects as well cause severe reputational damage to the University and could also feasibly terminate all existing and future data sharing agreements and research partnerships with collaborators and providers locally, nationally, and internationally.
Supervision Received
