What you'll do
- Reprocess critical and semi-critical devices such as surgical instrumentation, respiratory items, laerdal suction units, incubators, and scopes, using steam sterilization, low temperature sterilization and high level disinfection.
- Check and test functionality of medical devices according to Manufacturers Instruction for Use (MIFU). Identify broken and non-functioning devices and report these to the MDR RN.
- Operate departmental equipment such as Steam Sterilizers, Low temperature Sterilizers, Washer Decontaminator, Cart washer, Ultrasonic washer, Dryers, Endoscope Reprocessor, TEE Reprocessor, and Sealers.
- Participate in routine maintenance of the department's equipment by cleaning, checking and testing sterilizers, washers and other equipment for functionality. Report maintenance needs to MDR RN on duty.
- Sort, inspect, and reassemble equipment, procedure trays, and O.R. sets according to written procedures.
- Wrap and label O.R. instruments, procedure trays, and supplies for sterilization according to written procedures.
- Fill orders for Medical Device Reprocessing Department according to requests.
- Maintain inventory levels of sterile supplies.
- Maintain accurate records to comply with quality assurance standards by performing duties such as reading and documenting biological indicator results.
- Perform routine cleaning of work and storage areas to maintain a clean, safe and orderly working environment.
- Maintain the computerized inventory management system of sterile instrumentation, by creating and updating instrument records and procedural manuals, tracking instruments and loaners, and producing reports
- Participate in education sessions as conducted by MDR management, including in-service sessions, team training huddles, instrument cleaning and assembly practice sessions. Review all materials on new and/or changing instruments as updated by MDR management.
- Perform related clerical duties such as answering telephones, taking messages, maintaining records and filing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bring
Qualifications
- Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Medical Device Processing (MDR) Technician course, plus one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the hospital.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Children's Hospital contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.
