At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.

Job Description Summary
In the UBC Sequencing and Bioinformatics Consortium (SBC), operates automated DNA Sequencers (including next generation (NGS) and Sanger instruments) and ancillary apparatus to provide sequencing services to various laboratories; communicates with clients regarding services available, including form of samples to be submitted, and protocols and procedures related to sequencing and genotyping; prepares reagents for sequencing and genotyping services; analyzes data and monitors instrument performance, maintaining equipment as necessary: this may include troubleshooting and performing routine repairs; tracking consumption of reagents and other supplies. The ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with a wide variety of clients is crucial.

Organizational Status

- Reports to the SBC Research Manager.

- Liaises with technical services of suppliers as necessary.

- Communicates with laboratories as required to supply services in automated DNA Sequencing and genotyping.

- May guide other users in sequencing and genotyping techniques; operation of the automated DNA sequencer and other relevant technological advancements.

Work Performed

1. Sanger Sequencing and Genotyping: Provides appropriate services, including (if required) purification of DNA to be processed, performance of required molecular biology protocols, and operation of automated DNA sequencer.

2. Next-generation sequencing: Generates sequencing libraries using commercially available kits and operates sequencing instruments and ancillary apparatus to generate sequence data..

3. Complies with standard operating procedures (SOP's) for all protocols.

4. Communicate with clients to answer questions regarding services available, form of samples to be submitted for each service, questions regarding results, and assistance with interpreting results; may provide training on sequencing/genotyping protocols and procedures.

5. Maintains records of sequencing, genotyping, related procedures performed, and data elucidated. Keeps records of failed protocols and analyses.

6. Maintains DNA sequencers and ancillary apparatus, as necessary, to ensure efficient and reproducible operation: this may include troubleshooting and performing routine repairs; Monitors performance of sequencers via regular use of internal standards for quality control.

7. Prepares reagents for sequencing, genotyping and associated procedures from commercially-supplied materials.

8. Performs other analytical and/or preparative work as requested.

9. Monitors supplies used in the operation of the DNA Sequencing and genotyping services, re-stocking as necessary.

10. Stays informed of new advances in relevant areas by reading original literature and technical bulletins.

11. Trains other users in the operation of the automated DNA sequencers, associated software packages, and ancillary apparatus.

12. Performs such other services as may be required by the SBC Research Manager.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors made could influence the ability of researchers and staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the facility's clientele. Consequently, documenting and reporting errors to the Research Manager as soon as they are uncovered is critical. Processing errors may lead to the loss of data and/or material, and/or the generation of erroneous data. This will necessitate the repetition of the work, requiring additional reagents and causing delay to the client, both adversely affecting the integrity of the facility. Failure to monitor instrument performance may lead to poor analyses, requiring repetition. Errors in monitoring consumables may lead to the temporary suspension of the facility's services. Work will be discussed with the SBC Research Manager on a regular basis, and reasons for failed experiments, etc. identified for the purpose of potentially revising relevant SOP's.

Supervision Received
Technologist works under the direction of the SBC Research Manager.

Supervision Given
Not expected to supervise other staff, but may be required to teach members of the Unit and others in the use of the automated DNA sequencers, associated software, and ancillary procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biological sciences or a related field preferred. Previous lab experience required.. Knowledge of next generation sequencing, Sanger sequencing and genotyping technologies is necessary. Experience in the use of an automated DNA sequencer is recommended. Ability to work effectively, both independently and especially in a team environment, and to exercise tact and discretion in interactions with external agencies and researchers, is essential. Strong skills in experimental design and troubleshooting are desired. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to compose reports, letters and other materials in clear and concise English is required. Computer experience required, including experience with sequencing analysis software, automation software, Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), molecular graphics software, and chemical databases.
