Job Summary
Working with the Educational Technology (Edtech) portfolio within the Faculty of Medicine s IT group (Digital Solutions), the Technical Producer is responsible for planning, preparing and implementing technical and logistical approaches to a variety of digital media projects;

The range of produced materials may include videos, audio, and other digital media materials for the web, public presentations and screenings. The position will also help ensure that emerging methods and practices of digital media production (such as Virtual, 360 video, and Augmented Reality) are explored in depth and, when appropriate, adopted.

This position works to ensure that faculty, staff and students within all regions of the Medical Education Distributed Program (The MED Program encompasses undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education), Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP), Island Medical Program (IMP), Northern Medical Program (NMP), Postgraduate Studies, Graduate Studies, Continuing Professional Development and the Health Professions group within the Faculty of Medicine (FOM) have access to video production resources.

The position works closely with other members of the Educational Technology team and educational stakeholders such as the Associate Dean, MD Undergraduate Education to ensure that video-based educational resources are created to appropriately, effectively, consistently and sustainably support the educational objectives of the MED Program.

This position requires work in both an office environment and off-site, and may be required to work some early mornings, evenings and weekends.

The Technical Producer, Video and Digital Media reports directly to the Senior Producer and Creative Lead, Video and Digital Media within the Educational Technology (EdTech) portfolio of Digital Solutions.

Work Performed
The Technical Producer, Video and Digital Media supports the development of video and digital media in an academic health environment. As part of their role, this individual:

- Oversees complex post-production workflows involving multiple personnel, project versioning and creates and maintains post-production plans.

- Designs, develops and implements digital media projects

- Plans digital media production schedules with project partners and consulting project stakeholders on best practices in digital media production for the purposes of teaching and learning in both budget funded and cost recovery stakeholder environments.

- Conceptualizes, films, edits, sound edits, and 2D/3D animates digital videos and other digital media projects.

- Researches new technologies and methodologies in the realm of digital and video-based media, and monitors trends in the industry that may be of benefit.

- Plans for the continuous improvement of video and digital media offerings including the adoption of Virtual Reality and other emerging technologies.

- Advises on and oversees the purchase of audio, visual and post-production equipment and software.

- Pitches, plans and develops projects for various clients for the online delivery of video and digital media, via multiple platforms.

- Manages source files and backups of multimedia artifacts with local hard drives and network databases.

- Works collaboratively with team members, including instructional designers, web programmers and video producers.

- Maintains connections with affiliated media teams within all UBC campuses.

- Mentors students and interns (such as coop students or Learning Technology Rovers) in the development of digital media artifacts.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors may result in inappropriate usage of video resources; inadequate Faculty of Medicine organizational preparation for adaptive and changing learning needs; unnecessary purchases based on misinformation; missed deadlines and cost overruns; miscommunications between students, faculty and staff members relating to learning resources; learning session or service disruptions; frustration for faculty, staff and students relying on training and services to support their video projects; breakdown in collaborative video efforts with other Faculties.

Supervision Received
The Technical Producer works under the supervision of the Senior Producer and Creative Lead, Video and Digital Media, and under the greater guidance of the Senior Manager of Educational Technology within Digital Solutions. The Technical Producer is expected to work with independence and latitude, making decisions within this broader supervision.

This position, through the Educational Technology Senior Manager, receives guidance and direction from the Associate Dean, MD Undergraduate Education, or delegate on pedagogical components of Educational Technology.

Supervision Given
The Technical Producer will be expected to supervise or direct the activities of co-workers or production crew. This position may also be expected to supervise co-operative education students, Learning Technology Rovers and work-study students. The Technical Producer will be expected to operate with wide latitude acting with independence within the team.

Minimum Qualifications
Two year diploma in media and broadcast production. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A certificate degree in Film Production, Media Design, Interactive Arts and Technology or similar is preferred.

- Filming, editing, producing and directing digital videos.
- Broad interoperability of software for editing, VFX, and sound editing.
- Conceptual plans: scripting and filming plans and other related logistical planning.
- Operating various professional 4K video cameras, sound equipment and microphone deployment.
- Managing a large and diverse post production team of editors, animators and sound designers throughout the post production process with little technical supervision or support.
- Client-facing consultations and interactions.
- Editing video, Creating 2D/3D animation and advanced compositing techniques.
- Video production for web download, streaming and interactive project delivery
- Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and 360 video recording techniques and their broader application in storytelling.
- Ability to initiate ideas and propose creative solutions. Ability to follow up on creative solutions by implementing them in real and measurable ways.
- Ability to supervise and guide the work of others and to manage and delegate tasks on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

- Working within a post-secondary educational environment, creating or overseeing the creation of educational videos and digital media projects for education.
- Experience working with physicians and subject matter experts for the purpose of knowledge translation.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
