Agricultural Officer – Legislated Mowing

We are currently hiring for a full-time Agricultural Officer – Legislated Mowing for an 18-months contract. This position is responsible for coordinating all roadside mowing of County owned ditches. Mowing activities support the integrated pest management strategy used to effectively manage and control noxious or prohibited-noxious weeds as governed by the Weed Control Act. This position is also responsible for assisting the Director, Fleet and Maintenance with the preparation of all agriculture department vehicles, including rental vehicles, trucks, tractors, and other equipment.  

This position assists with snow removal in the winter months working in collaboration with Recreation and Culture Department. 

Responsibilities include:

• Assist the Agricultural Fieldman and Assistant Agricultural Fieldman with orientation and training of seasonal staff
• Co-ordinate regular equipment maintenance; ensure all Ag vehicles are inspected and repaired for next season's use
• Conduct basic vehicle maintenance and monitor gas/oil/filter requirements for all Ag department vehicles in the fleet, as well as monitoring any rental vehicles
• Monitor warranties for Ag vehicles and equipment; Order and pick-up parts from suppliers
• Ensure compliance with OHS legislation and County policies for safe operations
• Assist mowing staff with blade changes and other minor repairs as needed
• Order grass seed, prepare equipment for seeding and conduct seeding
• Supervising seasonal staff
• Occasional mowing duties will be required for coverage

• A valid Class 5 driver's license and acceptable driver's abstract
• Heavy duty mechanic or other mechanic certification preferred
• Operating tractors, front-end loaders, side-arm mowers, 3-pt hitch mowers, 3-pt hitch seeder, hydro-seeder
• Operating and maintenance of farm equipment or heavy equipment
• Hauling equipment would be an asset
• Physically fit
• Comfortable dealing with the public and working alone for extended periods
• Supervisory experience

Term Length: This is an 18-month contract position starting from April 1, 2025 to October 30, 2026

Work Schedule: This position works 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Occasional weekend work may be required during busy season.

Hourly Pay: $46.86 to $55.13 an hour.
