Maintenance Mechanic

Position Summary BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Maintenance Mechanic. This position responds to work orders and trouble calls and provides quality service to the School’s staff and students. The position carries out planned and emergency maintenance and repairs to machinery.Please note: This job is currently undergoing a job review, revision, and evaluation. Duties & Responsibilities DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responding to work requests, trouble calls, and taking corrective action to fix machinery and equipment; this includes troubleshooting problems on a wide variety of systems. The problems are sometimes difficult to identify, solutions are not standard, and many are emergency calls. Priorities are established by assessing the impact on property and public safety. Establishing priorities and requirements for the Preventative Maintenance (PM) Plan, including items that need to be inspected and maintained for regulatory reasons. Conducting preventative maintenance on multiple systems which are interconnected, as per the PM Plan; duties include printing off daily schedule, inspecting, identifying deficiencies and taking corrective action. (duties include but are not limited to: cleaning, inspecting, greasing, lubricating, replacing fan belts). Estimating labour and material costs for major repairs, renovations, upgrades and projects, including reviewing project drawings, sketches, and specifications and making recommendations for improvements. Communicating with individuals from a variety of departments within BCIT, and external contractors brought in to work on systems, including working with difficult or upset clients, describing problems and explaining the interrelation of complex systems. Continually learning about advances in system and equipment design, advancing technology through communicating with local suppliers, on-the-job training, adapting older systems to work with new components and parts. Staying current on new technology and regulatory requirements including changes to standards and codes related to the profession. Upgrading existing systems to more modern and efficient options. Preparing drawing, sketches, layout diagrams, and estimates for internal projects and work required. Maintaining an inventory of supplies. Determining parts/equipment requirements, preparing work orders and purchase requisitions; maintaining records of work performed and completing work control forms. Removing old machinery and equipment, relocating machinery and equipment, and installing and commissioning new machinery and equipment. Maintaining financial records including packing slips, purchase receipts, and charge card statements. Maintaining attendance records and work logs as required. Providing technical information and recommendations to Chief Instructors and Associate Deans with respect to upgrading equipment and implementing approved improvements. Maintaining the work area and the maintenance shop in a clean and safe condition. Assisting others by lifting and carrying materials, and positioning items for repair or reassembly. Completing assignments as part of a team or independently. Coordinating and monitoring the work of contractors to ensure adherence to established safety standards and applicable codes. Adhering to and promoting safety standards required by regulatory bodies including but not limited to: WCB Regulations, WHMIS, equipment lock-out, fall protection, confined space, rigging and hoisting, and asbestos identification. May have supervising/training duties with helpers/apprentices. Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:Definition: The qualifications section for this position was developed using the approved job evaluation plan, agreed to between the BCGEU and BCIT. The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent’s existing qualifications.Education: A valid Trades Qualification or an Interprovincial Trades Ticket (Journeyperson status (Millwright)) plus technical education and/or certifications in the relevant building trades industry. License(s)/Certifications(s): Certificate of Qualification and Certificate of Apprenticeship, (both with Red Seal Endorsement). Valid driver’s licence. Experience: Two (2) years general trades experience plus up to four (4) years current relevant experience in the building trades industry. Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise: Basic computer training and experience is required. Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills, with an internal and external customer service orientation. Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines. Administrative Skills: Prioritizing workload and assignments. Other Skills/Abilities: Experience working in a busy, demanding environment with changing priorities is essential. Willingness to maintain currency in the field and learn on the job is essential.
