Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. You can contribute to that success while building your career.Nature and ScopeThe Controller plays a key role in supporting SIIT's financial integrity by managing core accounting functions and ensuring accurate, timely recording of transactions. This position contributes to the efficiency and compliance of financial operations while fostering an environment that reflects SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.General AccountabilityThe Controller is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting activities and ensuring adherence to established financial principles, practices, and procedures. This role focuses on transactional accuracy, internal controls, and operational finance support, while collaborating on budgeting and financial reporting initiatives.The Controller's primary responsibilities are to manage and direct transactional processes, internal controls, cash management, systems administration and provide operational finance support to institutional departments. This role oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, billings, collections and general accounting. The position works with highly sensitive and confidential information. This position includes the following broad range of accountabilities: Specific AccountabilitiesFinance OperationsMaintain accurate financial records in compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policiesProvide oversight of accounting processes, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and tax-related functionsAdminister and enhance the Institute's accounting systems; lead process improvements to increase efficiencyStrengthen internal control procedures to meet audit and compliance requirementsReview or perform reconciliations for bank accounts, receivables, payables, inventory, assets, and amortizationOversee treasury activities, including cash flow forecasting and managementManage banking relationships and ensure efficient administration of banking servicesSupport contract administration from a financial perspective, ensuring compliance with terms and proper documentationAssist with insurance-related financial requirements, including policy renewals and coverage verificationEnsure proper stewardship of financial documents and confidential recordsCompliance & ReportingEnsure adherence to internal controls, financial policies, and recognized accounting standardsMonitor and enforce cut-off procedures for accurate period-end reportingReview or prepare government filings, including GST/PST, workers' compensation, and other statutory requirementsProvide timely and accurate reporting on operational areas, financial performance, and efficiency metrics to support decision-makingProvide budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting for assigned budget areasAssist in the development and renewal of institutional financial policies and proceduresSupport external audit processes and ensure compliance with Not-for-Profit Organization (NFPO) standardsSafeguard institutional financial assets and resources through robust compliance practicesLeadership & Team DevelopmentCoach and mentor team members to promote professional growth and developmentManage scheduling, workload distribution, and performance to maintain service levelsFoster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environmentSupport recruitment and retention efforts to build a strong finance teamRequired Qualifications and Experience: A degree or post graduate degree in Business/Accounting and a professional accounting designation (CPA) are required. Proven experience in managing full-cycle accounting operations, including general ledger, reconciliations, and financial close processes. Skilled in identifying process inefficiencies and leading improvements to optimize financial workflows and systems. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. Previous experience in a post-secondary institution and knowledge of Not-for-Profit Organization (NFPO) standards are considered strong assets. Strong interpersonal and people management skills, a collaborative style and the ability to communicate effectively across organizational levels are necessary. As an employee in the Finance department, this position is subject to accept or handle monies on behalf of SIIT.
