Position Summary The Recreational Therapist in the Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) Program at RVH supports both the 8-bed Regional Child and Youth Mental Health Inpatient Unit and Acute Outpatient Services (AOS) as needed. CYMH Recreational Therapists are cross trained to provide coverage within the broader Mental Health and Addictions Programs, with the expectation of supporting organizational Human Resource needs across RVH as they arise. This position works day shifts, including alternating weekends. You will enable patients to acquire and/or maintain the skills, knowledge, and behaviours that allow them to enjoy leisure optimally, function independently with minimal assistance, and participate as fully as possible in society. Key Responsibilities Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to complete comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments, identifying patient/family strengths, dynamics, behaviours, attitudes, and cultural considerations. Support the development and revision of individualized care plans, implementing interventions through individual, group, and family programming. Assist patients in utilizing existing leisure skills and/or acquiring new ones appropriate to their limitations and future lifestyle within their home and community. Identify information and resources related to physical and architectural barriers in the environment. Participate in discharge planning activities, including linking with community agencies and other Health Centre programs to promote awareness of the importance of a successful leisure lifestyle to improve and maintain functional leisure abilities across physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. Implement and role model effective behaviour management strategies, including managing aggressive patient situations. Assist with referral triage and provide Recreational Therapy support to patients and families in the Child and Youth Acute Outpatient Services (AOS). Develop strong, collaborative working relationships with members of the interdisciplinary team. Engage in evidence-based practice and contribute to quality improvement initiatives in Recreation Therapy. Qualifications Four-year undergraduate degree and postgraduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation. Preference for candidates registered or eligible for registration with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (R/TRO). Experience working with people with disabilities, leading psychoeducational groups, and collaborating in a team setting. Experience in child/adolescent mental health care settings preferred. Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and the Public Hospitals Act. Skills & Competencies Strong computer skills.
