Purpose: The Senior Associate will report directly to the Practice Lead of the Building & Fire Code Group and work closely with subject matter experts across the firm. The Senior Associate will lead and manage investigations related to building and fire code compliance, any may involve personal injury claims, construction disputes, and fire losses. This role involves consulting with clients, conducting technical investigations, preparing technical analyses and reports, and contributing to business development. The Senior Associate is expected to independently manage projects, mentor junior team members, develop strong client relationships, and actively contribute to the firm’s business growth, while establishing a professional presence within the industry. Key Responsibilities: Manage project timelines, scopes, budgets, invoicing, and accounts receivable according to organizational best practices. Conduct site examinations, document reviews, and technical investigations related to building and fire code compliance. Assess compliance with building codes (NBC, OBC, BCBC, ABC, etc.,), fire codes, industry standards (NFPA, CSA, ASTM), and by-laws across all phases of design, construction, and occupancy. Review and interpret project documentation, drawings, and building department records. Prepare technical reports and supporting documentation based on sound investigations and analysis. Directly liaise with clients, providing regular updates throughout the investigation. Communicate investigation findings and analysis clearly to colleagues, clients, and, where required, in court as an expert witness. Support and mentor junior and intermediate team members in technical work and professional development. Actively participate in business development and marketing efforts alongside FE staff, contributing to the firm’s market presence and growth opportunities. This role will require a significant focus on marketing as it is a major part of the position. Attend industry seminars and events to maintain technical expertise and strengthen professional networks. Expectations: Spend approximately % of your time working on client files Spend approximately % of your time on industry and marketing activities Spend approximately % of your time on professional development and administrative activities Qualifications Degree in engineering, architecture, building science, or a related field. Professional designation ( equivalent) strongly preferred. Minimum - years of experience in building code consulting, fire and life safety consulting, or a related technical field. Strong knowledge of Canadian building and fire codes and other industry standards, with the ability to interpret and apply them in complex cases, is required. Ability to review and interpret design drawings and other technical documents. Proven ability to independently manage projects, clients, and deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports, drawings, and providing expert testimony. Demonstrated ability to mentor junior colleagues and contribute to business development. Willingness to travel throughout Canada as needed.
