The successful candidate must have a deep understanding of municipal politics and a track record of uncovering news that matters to citizens. The successful candidate should have a deep understanding of the many communities of southern Alberta and the ability to connect the workings of municipal governments to the key issues and needs of these groups.This is a 12 month contract.CBC Calgary is focused on original storytelling. We are there for the community when it counts. We are guided by the principles of excellence, collaboration and creativity. You will break original stories that others don’t have. You are as comfortable in breaking news situations as you are at providing analysis. You thrive when you are in the spotlight and can appear regularly on digital, radio and streaming programs. You will be a key live presence on our quadrennial municipal election broadcast specials.There is a requirement to develop meaningful stories and contacts. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required.Key Tasks:- Writes and packages stories for digital platforms.- Able to deliver analysis on top stories.- Contributes original ideas daily.- Produce original journalism related to municipal affairs in Calgary.- Provides expertise on municipal issues to programs as needed.- Makes recommendations to assist in planning station coverage.- Writes quick, accurate stories in a breaking news situation.- Prepares scripts and presents for broadcast media.- Edits audio and video to produce broadcast stories to deadline.- Connects developments at city hall to audience needs in diverse communities.- Remains up to date on changes at city hall.We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following- A university degree in journalism or equivalent.- A passion for and deep knowledge of municipal politics- An aptitude for finding stories in complex civic and budget documents, while using compelling narrative to explain them to a broad audience. - Demonstrated solid news judgment.- Demonstrated experience using investigative tools to uncover news, including freedom of information requests.- Ability to balance multiple priorities and to respond to competing demands in a short span of time.- Ability to participate in a highly creative and collaborative team.- Demonstrated ability to plan projects and recommend news treatments for multiple platforms.- Experience delivering live debriefs on radio and television.- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends, as required.Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing. We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country’s diversity.
