Financial Analyst, Strategic Finance Office Summary: The financial analyst provides accounting expertise, internal control advice, training and guidance, enhancing a strong financial control framework, and supporting institutional financial reporting requirements. Key responsibilities include serving as the primary contact for institutional reporting requirements for an assigned group of colleges or units, preparing financial statements, reviewing and enhancing internal controls over financial reporting, completing accounting processes such as variance analysis and reconciliations, and the review, documentation and enhancement of current business processes and practices including institutional policies. These activities require liaising with other institutional units as well as external stakeholders. This position also has primary responsibility for reconciling and maintaining information related to the university’s capital assets and supporting institutional reporting and accountability processes. Duties and Responsibilities: Analyzes control processes that support adherence to regulatory policies and practices, reporting regulations, and internal and external standards Assists with the creation and delivery of reports required for various forms of institutional reporting to the university’s executive management, external audiences, and other stakeholders Contributes to the preparation of the institution’s annual and quarterly financial statements and other types of financial reports including related working papers Acts as a resource within the unit, including but not limited to reviewing financial information and collaborating with client groups to rectify errors, for annual audit processes and the preparation of other required institutional financial and regulatory reports for internal or external purposes Reconciles and maintains information related to the university’s capital assets Provides support for professional client-centered service through the delivery of advice on financial accounting issues Communicates technical information and knowledge to internal business processing units and non-technical users Provides ad hoc and planned client-centred training and knowledge transfer for assigned client groups Fosters collaborative working relationships with peers to facilitate knowledge sharing, professional development, and enhance departmental service Develops, implements and maintains process documentation specific to the work of position Develops an understanding of and remains current in Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position. Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in accounting A professional accounting designation Minimum of three years of related experience working in a client-oriented accounting environment providing training and advice on financial accounting, internal control, and financial reporting matters Experience in auditing and preparing related working papers is an asset Familiarity with fund accounting is an asset Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to identify and analyze complex issues, arguments and evidence and reach sound and balanced judgments Ability to work independently and prioritize the competing demands of a high-volume workload effectively to meet deadlines Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a diverse environment Ability to work outside of regular hours as required Demonstrated ability in advanced spreadsheet applications and functions such as pivot tables and v-lookups Demonstrated ability in advanced data base applications, such as query and report development, is an asset
