We currently have 4 existing community-based programs and another starting in January. ITEP is the largest teacher education program in the territories of Canada whose enrolment is centred on the needs of First Nations teacher candidates. ITEP plays a lead role in the achievement of the University of Saskatchewan’s and the College of Education’s strategic aims of Indigenous engagement and reconciliation. As an Indigenous teacher education program, ITEP prepares First Nations teachers to rely on the strengths of their cultures, languages, protocols and traditions to create safe and inclusive learning spaces for learners built on respect, relationality, reciprocity, and responsibility. Summary Reporting to the Director of ITEP in the College of Education, this position develops and implements practices, policies, and procedures to enhance cultural, academic, and administrative aspects of community-based programs. The role builds and maintains collaborative relationships within the College, University, and First Nations communities, requiring flexibility and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. The Coordinator / Instructor provides guidance both on-campus and in community-based programming, bridging academic departments and ITEP while addressing complex socio-economic, academic, and life-transition challenges for students. The initial primary focus will be on community-based coordination, with course instruction varying according to program needs. Duties and Responsibilities Collaborates with ITEP and academic departments to enhance culturally responsive programming and Indigenous cultural focus Reassesses program processes and develops improvement strategies for recruitment, programming, admissions, and communications Liaises with the College of Education and campus partners to support program requirements, placements, wellness, and integrated student services Demonstrates knowledge of band funding, student loans, scholarships, and culturally relevant protocols Understands First Nations community needs, local protocols, and policies influencing educational contexts Coordinates teacher candidate placements with the Field Experiences office for all ITEP and community based in school experiences, including student teaching and extended practicum Develops strong mentoring relationships with students and implements strategies to support, teach, retain, and transition them to university learning Encourages student persistence by addressing barriers and connecting students with appropriate services, , AES. Assesses academic needs and provides culturally responsive supports, evaluations, and retention initiatives Monitors student progress and attendance, following up with success plans, reports, and interventions as needed Supports ITEP community-based programs and collaborates with coordinators, counselors, and students from recruitment to graduation Coordinates student events, orientations, mentorship activities, cultural camps, and instructor meetings Oversees off-campus course delivery, instructor appointments, schedules, and logistical needs Ensures accuracy and timeliness in admissions, registration, and graduation processes while providing high-quality service Prepares reports, proposals, submissions, and documentation for funding, scholarships, awards, and post-secondary requirements Ensure student success by providing support in and out of the classroom environment, including academic, personal, cultural, and counselling services Maintains accurate records, spreadsheets, student files, academic profiles, and progress documentation Rectifies student and instructor concerns, including attendance and academic-related issues, in collaboration with Directors Generates and updates CB protocol and procedure handbooks Teaches program courses or off-campus courses as assigned Offers academic supports such as tutorials, workshops, referrals, and degree completion planning Communicates regularly with administrators, CB coordinators, and students, including responding to correspondence and completing required travel Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non-judgement Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position Qualifications A master's degree in education (completed or in progress) is required A valid Saskatchewan Teaching Certificate or the ability to obtain one Minimum of three years working in First Nation Post-Secondary Education at a University or College setting Demonstrated experience in academic advising and personal counselling Proven ability to work effectively with diverse individuals in complex environments Strong public relations and interpersonal skills including tact, discretion, courtesy, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity A thorough understanding of local First Nations communities, cultures, protocols, and perspectives Familiarity with First Nations policies and procedures in an educational setting Knowledge and sensitivity to First Nations and off campus issues Thorough understanding of university environments including related policies, procedures and regulations Working knowledge of university systems such as SiRIUS, PAWS, UniFi, as well as Microsoft office applications Knowledge of the College of Education courses, policies and degree requirements Ability to adapt to and thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment Ability to establish and maintain positive partnership and working relationships with diverse teams of people inside and outside the College of Education Sound judgment and commitment to privacy and confidentiality
