Position Overview

We are seeking a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS), or licensed customs broker to join our team in a role that blends regulatory compliance with retail strategy.

The ideal candidate has deep expertise in Canadian customs regulations and tariff classification, along with the ability to apply this knowledge to Pet Valu's sourcing and product strategies. Acting as an internal consultant, they will build relationships with merchandising and inbound transportation teams to optimize sourcing, identify duty-saving opportunities, and ensure compliance. This role requires a strategic thinker who can balance daily tasks—like permit management, tariff coding, and audits—with broader goals such as cost reduction and risk mitigation. B2B or B2C retail experience is essential, as is the ability to turn customs expertise into actionable strategies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Customs Subject Matter Expert

Act as an internal consultant to merchandising teams to evaluate and recommend sourcing decisions to optimize customs impactLead initiatives focused on reducing duty rates

Compliance Risk Resolution and Discrepancy Management

Resolve compliance risks related to samples, tradeshows, and undeclared goods.Investigate load factor discrepancies and initiate necessary Customs amendments.

Tariff Coding, Classification, and Compliance Audits

Ensure consistent tariff coding and compliance with customs regulations.Manage tariff code changes and instruct on necessary data updates.Ensure accurate classification and valuation of imported merchandise.

Import Requirements and Permit Management

Manage data components related to import requirements, including CFIA permits.Investigate and provide direction on regulated items.Manage import permits and guide exporters to ensure compliance.

Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications

Certifications: Hold either a Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS) certification.Experience: At least 5 years of experience in a customs environment, with direct experience in Canadian customs procedures.Language Skills: Proficient in both English verbal and written communication. French language skill is an asset.Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Excel.Decision-Making: Ability to work effectively with ambiguous information and to draw on experience to make decisions.
