The Traffic Engineering & Road Safety team of the Department of Public Works directly impacts the quality of traffic engineering efficiency and road safety engineering operations in the province. We develop and ensure comprehensive standards, policies, procedures, and programs are in place to mitigate injury and collisions on Nova Scotia's highways.
Our team is comprised of professional staff who develop and manage various policies and programs, collect collision and traffic census data, conduct engineering studies and analysis, and impact traffic control devices, highway signage, legislation, and regulations.
About Our OpportunityReporting to the Manager of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety and working under the general direction of the Senior Traffic Specialist Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible for the acquisition, processing, management, analysis and distribution of traffic census information, performing special studies, supervision of casual staff and accurate estimates of average annual daily traffic figures.
Primary AccountabilitiesKey responsibilities for the position include:
- Prepares the annual temporary traffic count program scheduling special count requests, annual count locations, provision of equipment and materials and data collection.
- Supervises casual employees hired to conduct traffic counts and surveys including planning work schedules, instructing on work procedures, measuring results and handling personnel issues.
- Calculates average group factors from permanent station data and applies factors to temporary counts to produce average annual daily traffic estimates for use and publication.
- Installs portable traffic counting technology throughout the Province, collects, edits and analyzes resulting data and enters information into appropriate databases.
- Develops new data management and reporting structures to support effective and efficient data storage, editing and retrieval.
- Prepares information products including books, digital maps, plans, charts, graphs, etc., displaying analysis results for presentation.
- Participates in the evaluation of new traffic census technology, software or procedures.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of traffic volume, classification and weigh-in-motion electronic technology.
High School completion and related post secondary training with 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
A working knowledge of design standards including the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada and the Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads is required. Strong skills in AutoCAD are a necessity.
Proficiency in design software including Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, and other graphic design software would be an asset.
A working knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Act, the Public Highways Act, Temporary Workplace Traffic Control Manual, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Regulations made pursuant to these Acts, would be considered an Asset.
Demonstrated capability to carry out projects within specific deadlines while meeting high quality standards is essential. The candidate must have strong organizational, leadership, analytical, writing and communication skills.

Working ConditionsYour time will be split between an office environment and travel throughout your area visiting work sites, reviewing roads and bridges, and travel for meetings in various weather conditions.

Salary Range: $1,936.49 - $2,273.69 Bi-Weekly
