Reporting to the Director of People & Culture, the Safety Coordinator is our safety champion with responsibilities including promoting a strong health and safety culture; implementing continuous improvement and site safety support; training and mentoring others; safety program management; and chairing Joint Health and Safety Committee (we call it JOSH Committee) and Operations Safety management committees.
This role also ensures our health and safety programs complies with all applicable external regulations and legislation. Key Responsibilities Health and Safety Culture: Act as a resource and advisor for the organisation on all health and safety- related matters.
Explain safety issues to engage others so they can learn, problem-solve, implement their corrective actions, and know how to prevent issue in the future.
Be the voice of safety through senior leadership, managers, and supervisors to enforce the message that everyone is responsible for safety.
Support the implementation and maintenance of the company's Health and Safety Management System.
Promote a proactive safety culture through education, engagement, continuous improvement initiatives and innovative practices.
Promote a culture of "safety belongs to all of us".
Promote a culture of near miss reporting with root cause and corrective actions.
Continuous Improvement and Site Safety Support: Collaborate with internal experts to conduct regular site inspections, hazard assessments, and audits to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and company policies.
Provide guidance on safe work practices and monitor adherence to company policies and procedures.
Lead and engage department supervisors (includes shift coordinators)/management as well as internal experts, in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and the development of corrective actions for safety incidents and near misses; until completion, ensure follow up of action plans together with one level up manager.
Track organization-wide actions and progress through to completion.
Perform risk assessments to identify potential hazards – assess site conditions, activities to identify risks, implement control measures, and communicate findings to team; train others on how to carry out risk assessments as needed.
Respond to and/or advise managers, supervisors, and team members in work refusal, emergency, or serious injury situations involving exposures/serious accidents.
Promptly investigate concerns and suggestions brought forward by employees or supervisors/people leaders, then liaise with management and/or HR as required.
Develop safety plans and safe work procedures.
Training, Mentoring, and Communication: Actively engage, consult with, mentor, train, and counsel managers and supervisors to foster a positive and proactive safety mindset about compliance, hazard assessments, and safety procedures/controls development.
Coach management to e valuate and monitor health and safety hazards and recommend strategies to control risks in the workplace.
Develop and deliver new hire safety orientations, toolbox talks, and job-specific training as part of our Safety Program to ensure supervisors and their employees remain knowledgeable about safety protocols and practices.
Coordinate other internal and external resources who will develop and deliver toolbox talks and other training as required.
Develop, deliver, and source training for our online learning management system (LMS) health and safety training.
Maintain and administer the LMS health and safety learning program and the related training records.
Register employees for external safety training and maintain internal training records and diarize to prompt renewals before expiries such as first aid, forklift, etc.
Program Management: Maintain OHS Program and ensure it is updated to continually align with all relevant regulations, legislation, and industry standards.
Create and communicate any changes across the organization so senior leadership, supervisors/managers, and employees understand their roles and responsibilities including when engaging with contractors and visitors.
Monitor industry best practices and recommend enhancements. Manage injury management program.
Work with shift coordinators/supervisors/managers including assist in creating and monitoring plans for heal-at-work, modified duties, and full return-to-regular work.
Act as the liaison with WorkSafe BC (forms completion, submission, communication, etc.).
Proactively manage cases and related documentation.
Develop programs in collaboration with key stakeholders that focus on prevention to eliminate or effectively control risks identified in accordance with regulations.
Ensure compliance with the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program and act as internal Lead conducting COR audits. Co-chair monthly JOSH committee meetings and chair safety management meetings including maintaining all necessary committee records and documentation.
Coordinate JOSH committee - meeting invites, team member training, hearing tests, and fire alarm testing.
Manage an efficient first aid program including file management of first aid reports, database administration, oversee first aid (room, supplies, and inventory management).
Collaborate with department leadership and internal experts (such as Plant, Maintenance, Engineering and Quality Assurance) to organize an action plan after audits/inspections are conducted by various external bodies, including the company's customers, WorkSafeBC, Fire Department, etc.
Follow up with department leaders to ensure actions are taken in their teams; escalate to one up manager if needed.
Ensure the safety of contractors, vendors, customers, visitors, etc.
through policy management and staff training.
Maintain the company's emergency preparedness plan.
Regularly review and revise the plan in collaboration with internal experts/leaders/management, who are responsible for their departments and/or the overall organization (such as the: Plant, Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, etc.).
Coordinate annual fire drills and recommend corrective actions based on the results.
Collaborate with purchasing to manage safety supplies and associated budgets.
Manage all safety requests to ensure they are prioritized, budgeted, and communicated.
Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, incidents, committee meetings, and training activities.
Prepare and present to management monthly safety metrics (as per established company KPI's).
Prepare and present bi-annual summary to the Executive team utilizing the WorkSafe summary document and internal performance KPIs to convey to the company's safety performance and opportunities.
Maintain all internal safety documentation that is necessary as part of the COR audit process including on our SharePoint site.
Collaboration and Engagement: Meet bi-weekly with Engineering and Maintenance Team Leaders to understand their priorities for the upcoming 30-60-90 days, to help them to create action plans to ensure all safety items are identified and addressed.
Meet bi-weekly with the Plant managers and supervisors to share any plant trend data, understand the issues that they are having, and provide suggestions for them to implement.
Work with the Purchasing department to ensure that their inventory of chemical products and substances complies with current WHMIS regulations.
General Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Training) Certificate/Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent related education 5+ years' experience in a safety-related position within a manufacturing environment Canada Registered Safety Profession (CRSP) designation or willingness to achieve the designation Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2; or OFA Level 1 and willing to obtain OFA Level 2 Experience with 5S/6S, Kaizen, Continuous Improvement initiatives, and other Lean Manufacturing Principles is an asset.
Must be certified to conduct internal Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits or be wiling to become certified.
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations in BC and Canada, including WorkSafeBC and the Worker's Compensation Act.
Proven ability to develop, lead, and deliver safety training.

Experience in learning and development and teaching adult learners.
Excellent written and oral English communication skills to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization and external service providers.
Strong organization skills.
Critical thinking and strong problem-solving focusing on feasible solutions that are practical, effective, sustainable, and as budget conscious as possible.
A solid understanding of accident causation and prevention.
Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate meetings/seminars effectively.
Ability to successfully lead/carry out audits; ideally be a COR certified auditor or willing to become certified.
Excellent change management skills to create a safe work environment for all employees. The ability to work in a dynamic multi-shift work environment.
Garibaldi Glass is a 3-shift operation, and a successful candidate must be willing to support all shifts.
Flexibility to conduct training or accident investigations on day, night, and afternoon shifts is required.
Proficient in MS Office suite and ability to learn other computer applications such as learning management systems (LMS).
