Who We Are

BA Blacktop, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction, was founded in the Province of British Columbia in 1956. We have grown to become a major general contractor and design-builder, with a progressive and multi-disciplined group of companies delivering specialized paving, concrete, milling, reclaiming, and recycling services, as well as multi-span bridge construction and innovative concrete structure solutions to clients throughout British Columbia.

BA Blacktop recognizes that students are the future of our industry. Our student co-op program is integral to the growth and future of BA Blacktop. The goal of our program is to help develop high-potential Civil Engineer candidates to reach their goal of securing a full-time position after graduation. We provide students with hands-on experience that helps them understand their role in the technical world. Our program gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical problem-solving situations. BA Blacktop's program offers a strong path for Civil Engineer students to gain valuable work experience with an emphasis on fieldwork experience.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Co-Op Student, you will do the following tasks:

Assisting Foreman:

Site Safety orientationsActively working on-site with the crewOrganizing tasksDaily Records and JournalTesting scheduling and recordingLayout and SurveySupport to the foreman

Working with Estimating Team:

Drawings take-offsRequest for Information redactionQuantity measuring and trackingProgress Estimate preparationContract & Subcontract Agreements Reviews

Shadowing Superintendent and Project Manager:

Traffic Management PlansNon-conformance reportsSchedule updateCost & Budget reviewSite meetingsCost integrationDaily project communicationExtra Work Order Consolidation

Skills and Abilities that You'll Develop

Understanding of road construction and related activitiesUnderstanding of the QMP and the testing requirements for roadwayStrong organizational skillsStrong interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., memos, reports, discussions)Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project)Proficiency in BlueBeam and AutoCAD as well as other related softwareQA, QC trainingEstimating experienceTracking of quantities

Qualifications and Knowledge that You Should Aspire to

Enrolled in a Degree program in Civil EngineeringBachelor's Degree in Construction Management or Related FieldPrevious work experience in Civil Engineering is an assetExcellent attention to detail, good judgment, and clear communication skillsKnowledgeable with Specifications and requirements in roadway construction (MMCD, MoTi, and Supplementary Municipal Specifications)PMP designationGold Seal Certification
