The Senior Producer also oversees the Ask CBC News team, the audience engagement branch of CBC News responsible for communicating trends and audience questions. You’re a natural leader and an expert in Canadian news, international headlines and trending stories. You champion and understand short-form video storytelling and experiment with social-first formats to reach younger and diverse audiences in Canada and beyond. You train and vet reporters and producers across CBC News teams to turn multiplatform stories into digital video. You have an eye for a strong pitch, engaging script and can coach journalists through hosting and presenting. You help guide the team’s editorial agenda by paying attention to audience trends and perspectives, champion inclusive programming that reflects today’s Canada.You put the audience first and encourage others to do the same.Through assigning, vetting, and other editorial coordination, you ensure accuracy, balance, and compelling visual direction on CBC News-branded social accounts. As a strong critical thinker, you make decisions and provide editorial guidance in line with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices and the overall digital news strategy. You are also familiar with CBC News programming.You have deep experience and knowledge of social media strategies and metrics and understand distribution. Collaborative work is vital in this role as you nurture relationships across the CBC News division to achieve shared goals. You strengthen our team with inclusive, creative ideas, and encourage open discussions. You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. This permanent, full-time role is scheduled Monday to Friday 12 to 8 p.m. ET with overtime as required.Key job responsibilitiesAssign daily news for the network social team by focusing story content with visually compelling treatments. Vet social content in video and text formats to meet CBC News standards.Format pitches for social-first videos for teams across the country and in world bureausTrain and provide regular feedback to the social team and reporters and producers across CBC News. Drive editorial decisions around breaking news, live coverage, and enterprise stories for social and digital platforms.Track, interpret and respond to metrics to make data-driven decisions. Direct social rollout of major investigations from the fifth estate, visual investigations and more.Lead regular training sessions for social-first best practices for TikTok, YouTube and other social platforms.Relevant skillsMinimum seven years recent experience in a social news environment.Strong journalistic skills and experience working in a newsroom, particularly in a breaking and live environment High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.University degree or equivalent.Ability to assign, manage and motivate a highly collaborative team, co-ordinate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.Extensive knowledge of social media platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, WhatsApp and other platforms.Extensive knowledge of audience-listening and metrics tools and how to interpret them.Substantial experience writing, copy editing, fact-checking and producing social content.Experience in producing news video optimized for digital properties.Ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information and ensure material is directed appropriately.Excellent news judgment and ability to work effectively under deadline pressure.Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.Leadership based on an open and inclusive mindset with a focus on elevating the voices of colleagues.Knowledge of CBCNews.ca style and Canadian Press style is an asset.Basic experience in iNews, Canva, photoshop and other image editing software.
