Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the Standards and Approval Engineer will be responsible to ensure all HPS products meet the relevant standards and approvals, and maintain the associated files/reports related to approval agencies such as UL, CSA, ABS, IEC, CE, etc. This includes; obtaining approvals for new products or additional ratings, addressing any deficiencies with existing products, coordinating approval agencies’ inspections, approving and recording approval agencies’ invoices, preparing budget estimation for engineering and quality, and representing HPS by participating in active working groups for standard developments such as IEEE, CSA, UL standard associations.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Co-ordinate with approval agencies (i.e. UL, CSA, etc.) for project scope and quote.
  • Determine product requirements per related standards.
  • Develop project plan by consultation with the related approval agency (i.e. UL, CSA, etc.). This might include a test plan (if required), required information to be submitted, schedules, etc.
  • When testing is required, determine if test can be done in-house or externally.
  • For In-house testing:
    • Determine test procedure per related standards.
    • With input from the approval agency, determine the samples to be tested.
    • Provide instruction to Testing lab on the required test procedures and methods.
    • Arrange approval agencies witness if required.
    • Assemble instrument calibration information for agency submission.
    • Prepare the test data for submission to approval agencies.
    • Submit test data to approval agencies and address any issues or questions arising from the data submission.
  • External Testing
    • Determine where the offsite testing is to be done.
    • Co-ordination with external lab with respect to samples to be tested, test methods and scheduling.
    • Oversee the testing as it happens.
    • Review test results.
  • Maintain existing approvals:
    • Ensure documentation is up to date..
    • When construction changes are made, evaluate whether the agency approvals need to be changed.
  • Work with the approval agencies’ engineering in developing draft approval reports.
  • Coordinate with Engineering to provide required information such as: ratings, construction details, alternative construction details, accessories if applicable, nameplate marking details.
  • Review report drafts before final approval.
  • Review and approve invoices related to approval agencies’ projects/agencies’ inspection invoices.
Do you qualify? We are seeking:

  • Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related field
  • 3-5 years’ experience with regulatory agencies such as UL, CSA, etc.
  • Working towards/eligible to apply for Professional Engineering Designation an asset
  • Knowledge in UL1561, UL1562, UL508, UL508a, or UL50 is an asset
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineers and manufacturing teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
  • Ability to maintain good relationship with approval agencies.
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Fully compliant with Microsoft office
