UNIT PROFILE
The Substance Use Service (SUS) works under the umbrella of the Concurrent Disorders Capacity Building Team in partnership with the RAAM Clinic and the Concurrent Disorders Outpatient Team. The SUS team is multidisciplinary, supporting individuals in the emergency department and those admitted to hospital who use substances, providing follow-up care and connecting them to outpatient care and community-based services through a harm reduction lens.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Peer Support Provider offers peer support to individuals accessing hospital-based care who use substances, focusing on harm reduction and increasing access to health care services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including shelters and community-serving agencies.
- Minimum 1-year related experience providing peer support in a harm reduction, healthcare, or community setting.
- Formal training in Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) an asset; training provided.
- Personal lived experience of substance use.
- Knowledge of peer support values and principles including hope, recovery, social inclusion, and personal growth.
- Ability to role-model self-care and self-management strategies.
- Familiarity with substance use, harm reduction values, and community resources.
- ASIST or similar Suicide Intervention Training (preferred, provided if needed).
- Experience/training in group facilitation (preferred).
- Excellent assessment, crisis intervention, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effective team functioning.
- Flexibility in work assignments.
- Commitment to personal professional development.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Good attendance and work record essential.
