Within the context of a client and family centered care model and in accordance with established vision and values of the organization, this position is responsible to perform a variety of clerical duties in support of Laboratory Services. Processes test requisitions and enters pertinent information into computer system. Explains requisition information to patients. Distributes specimen collection information and containers. Answers telephone: responds to general enquires, takes and relays messages or refers caller to appropriate person or area. Makes appointments. Opens, sorts and distributes mail. Prepares/types reports and maintains related records
What You’ll Do
- Processes test requisitions by receiving written or verbal instructions from physicians and enters pertinent information into computer system such as age, weight and fasting according to the specific laboratory test required; explains requisition information to patients.
- Distributes Laboratory Specimen Collection Containers including pertinent specimen collection information.
- Answers telephone; responds to general enquires, takes and relays messages or refers caller to appropriate person or area. Makes appointments and attends to urgent requests.
- Records tests on Laboratory forms for billing purposes.
- Opens, sorts and distributes mail; sorts Laboratory reports for distribution to physicians and referral laboratories.
- Prepares/types reports and maintains related records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
What you bring
- Grade 12, medical terminology, two years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Ability to keyboard at 45 w.p.m.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with other effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) provides laboratory testing at 31 sites across the lower mainland and central coast of BC, including acute care hospital laboratories and specialty laboratories.
