The Opportunity
The Ministry of Social Services has an exciting opportunity for a flexible, self-starter to join the Health & Safety Unit as a Safety Analyst. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in continuous improvements in health and safety performance in the ministry. In this position, you will be part of a team responsible for the development, coordination, and delivery of the ministry's occupational health and safety reporting, training, and risk management programs.
Your primary duties will be to:- Manage the central incident reporting process, conduct incident investigations, and oversee workplace inspections.
- Conduct analytical review assessments, trend analysis, evaluations, and statistical reporting of incidents and illness reports.
- Design and conduct research specific to ministry safety issues/trends, conduct literature reviews and inter-jurisdictional scans, and obtain relevant/appropriate safety information from credible national/international sources.
- Coordinate and/or research safety training programs addressing both physical and psychological safety issues.
- As part of a team, contribute to the development of safety policies, safe work practices, safe operating procedures, safety bulletins, and performance measure indicators for the safety management system.
- Assist with the oversight and management of the ministry’s Occupational Health Committees.
- Provide best practice guidance on risk management issues related to ministry offices/facilities throughout the province.
- Participate in hazard identification exercises, risk assessment, and development of safety controls.
- Provide advice and interpretation of safety policies, safe work practices and OH&S legislation regarding safety issues, including work refusals.
- Manage the ministry Health and Safety SharePoint site.
- Work within a small yet dynamic Health and Safety team delivering safety solutions to a wide variety of professionals within the ministry.
In order to be successful in the role, you will have:
- Excellent oral/written communication skills to share information to a variety of audiences that persuades, convinces, builds support, educates and promotes understanding.
- The ability to dissect data and provide analytical summaries for presentation to executive leadership.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and workplace inspections.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
- The ability to synthesize information and ideas to develop projects, services, information sessions and education materials.
- Experience planning, developing and evaluating learning materials for diverse audiences.
- Experience recording and organizing a variety of information in a clear, concise, accurate and timely manner.
- The ability to work independently and as a team member to meet client, program and ministry goals.
- The ability to accurately enter, format and access data using various computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite and operation of multimedia presentation equipment.
Typically, the knowledge and experience required to achieve the above is obtained through a bachelor's degree in a related field. An Occupational Health & Safety certificate, diploma and/or other relevant safety related training from a recognized safety association and strong data analytical skills is an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
This position provides an opportunity to travel to multiple worksites and remote locations within the province and requires a valid Class 5 Saskatchewan Driver's License. This role will require approximately 30% travel throughout Saskatchewan.
