Purpose of the PositionThe conductor position plays a foundational role in the railway, operating within the framework of the union agreement. Conductors work as part of a train crew, assisting with tasks such as switching rail cars and moving them between rail yards.
This role requires vigilance about safety, both for yourself and those around you. You must be prepared for unscheduled shift work, extended periods away from home, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
Job Requirements- Perform physically demanding work, including walking up to 10 kilometers a day on uneven ground, climbing, lifting, and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds)
- Work unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 environment
- Work up to 12 hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays
- Report to work within a two-hour call window, after scheduled rest
- Excellent focus, attention to detail, and ability to multitask
- Strong communication skills, providing clear and concise instructions/directions over radio
- Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods
- Work in either train or yard service, depending on seniority
- Carry out specific instructions detailing a train's route and movements
- Coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling, and lifting out coupling devices
- Observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting train movement
- Signal crew members for engine or train movement using specific signals or radio
- Maintain a thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders, and bulletins
- Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations
- Move on and off moving or stationary equipment
- Fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports
- Handle emergency situations and operate fire extinguishers, applying first aid techniques when necessary

CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid in-class and field training. This includes earning 80% of the job rate upon starting classroom training ($188.23 per day) and 90% of the job rate upon successful completion of the classroom portion ($211.76 per day). The first-year salary as a qualified conductor is $85,000.
Operating safely is a core foundation of CPKC. Successful candidates are required to complete a pre-employment medical assessment, which includes a physical, vision test, hearing assessment, alcohol and drug audit, and a qualification drug test. Candidates will also undergo a background investigation, including a criminal history check, education verification, and driver's license verification.
