Job Summary

Fraser Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. In this role, you will provide and coordinate the delivery of psychiatric nursing care services to patients, demonstrating nursing expertise and clinical leadership in evidence-based practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care of assigned patients, identifying actual or potential problems and strengths through nursing diagnosis, planning interventions, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Actively participate in and support the total therapeutic program of the Unit, collecting information from various sources using skills of observation, communication, and physical assessment to enable the provision of appropriate nursing care.
  • Communicate and consult with members of the healthcare team about patients' care, setting priorities, assigning, and delegating tasks to support staff, participating in interprofessional conferences, and explaining the plan of care to patients and their families.
  • Act as an advocate to protect and promote patients' rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information, participating in quality improvement activities and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to established safety and emergency practices and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessment and provide nursing care through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic, safety-type interventions, including crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects), counseling, and group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with patients, families/caregivers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to promote person-centered care that demonstrates empathy for patients/families/caregivers, sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences, including advocacy for special populations.
