About the Role

Mott MacDonald is a leading engineering and advisory consultancy with a significant presence in the North American transportation and infrastructure sectors. We are seeking a highly experienced Geotechnical Lead to join our dynamic team in Eastern Canada.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical guidance and oversight for geotechnical design and consulting services, including transportation infrastructure, excavations, tunnels, water and wastewater, energy, pipelines, and ports.
  • Team Management: Manage and develop a team of geotechnical engineers to deliver geotechnical investigations, geoseismic evaluations, and geotechnical design work.
  • Client Relationships: Build and maintain relationships with internal and external clients, including other engineering disciplines and project managers.
  • Proposal Development: Lead proposal efforts and compile geotechnical proposals for various infrastructure projects.
  • Subconsultant Management: Manage subconsultants and subcontractors to provide geotechnical investigation services, including drillers, utility locators, surveyors, traffic control, and geotechnical laboratories.
  • Community Engagement: Participate and engage with the geotechnical community in Ontario, specifically the GTHA.
  • Talent Development: Coordinate with the Canada Geotechnical Lead to plan and lead the hiring of new staff, identifying gaps in the team and planning for growth.
Requirements
  • Education: A strong academic background, with a Bachelor's level degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering (a Master's degree would be considered an asset).
  • Professional Certification: Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status in Ontario.
  • Experience: 15+ years of relevant industry experience in geotechnical consultancy (not including education) (work with the Toronto Transit Commission, Metrolinx, Ministry of Transportation Ontario, and/or Ministry of Infrastructure would be considered an asset).
  • Registry or Experience: Registry or experiences for application to be registered in MTO's Registry Appraisal and Qualifications System (RAQS) system for medium or high complexity geotechnical engineering and/or tunnelling categories is preferred.
  • Skills: Effective communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate effectively with all levels of staff and clients (technical and non-technical) and nurture the development of junior staff.
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical skills associated with geotechnical investigations, geoseismic evaluations, and geotechnical design work, including working understanding of geotechnical software (e.g. Plaxis, GeoStudio packages, Rocscience packages, Ensoft packages, etc.).
  • Leadership Skills: Ability and enthusiasm for supervising the work of others, including check and approval of key deliverables.
  • Project Management Skills: Gained project management skills and demonstrable technical lead and collaborative capabilities.
