We are seeking a highly skilled Geomatics Officer to join our team in Yellowknife. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to work with spatial data management, analytics, and technical support services for the City's Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS).
About the RoleThis position works collaboratively with all departments to provide a high caliber of customer service. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in GIS, geomatics engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of three years of experience in designing, creating, and updating thematic maps and spatial data products.
- Main Responsibilities:
- Designing, creating, and updating thematic maps and spatial data products using GIS software;
- Collecting, cleaning, transforming, processing, and analyzing spatial data from various sources, ensuring data accuracy and integrity;
- Operating and processing data collected via GNSS receivers (e.g., RTK, PPK techniques);
- Conducting spatial analysis to identify spatial relationships, trends, and patterns in geospatial data, providing actionable insights for decision-making;
- Writing and maintaining scripts in SQL, Python, or R to automate data cleaning, transformation, processing, and visualization tasks, ensuring efficiency and reproducibility of GIS workflows;
- Operating UAVs to capture high-resolution aerial imagery, planning and executing drone flights, and processing the imagery into orthomosaics, digital surface models (DSMs), and 3D models for spatial analysis.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A post-secondary diploma in geography, GIS, environmental science, geomatics engineering, or a related field;
- A minimum of three years of related experience in GIS, or a related field performing the mentioned tasks;
- Strong knowledge of GIS software and technologies, including GPS/GNSS receivers;
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
