Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning for Mining Safety

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing machine learning algorithms to quantify the safety of underground mine roofs and sidewalls using audio recordings of tool impacts on the surface.
About the Project: This project is a collaboration with Nutrien, the world's largest potash miner, and is funded by NSERC. The postdoctoral researcher will work under the supervision of Prof. Travis Wiens and will be responsible for applying the latest developments in machine learning to develop and optimize the performance of an algorithm to predict whether a recording is drummy or tight.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and optimize machine learning algorithms for predicting mine safety
- Work with a dataset of audio recordings of tool impacts on mine walls and roofs
- Collaborate with industrial partners and funding agencies to ensure project success
- Communicate results via publications and conference presentations
Requirements:
- PhD in a related field within the last five years
- Demonstrated experience in developing machine learning algorithms with small datasets of arbitrary and/or time-series data
- Demonstrated ability to take the lead role in successfully published paper(s) in high quality journals or peer-reviewed conferences
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with recording and processing of audio data
- Experience with determining confidence intervals for ML classifications or regression
- Matlab ML programming experience
- Python ML programming experience
- Familiarity with rock mechanics and mine operations
- Familiarity with acoustic and vibrational wave propagation
