Job Summary

The Laborer is an entry-level position that requires no prior experience in scrap metal and recycling. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and ability to learn quickly.

Responsibilities include assisting with daily operations, such as scrap inspection, sortation, and yard maintenance, as well as operating mobile equipment and performing general maintenance duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow established safety, environmental, and routine procedures specific to the yard
  • Operate forklifts, loaders, and material handlers to assist with loading, off-loading, and sorting scrap materials
  • Inspect incoming scrap against quality and environmental standards
  • Apply deductions to non-conforming materials through effective communication with the scale house or yard inspector
  • Perform and document daily equipment care
  • Detect and report faulty tools, equipment, environmental hazards, and safety hazards to a supervisor
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and equipment
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Promote and practice Gerdau's core values

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure non-conforming objects are removed from incoming scrap vehicles
  • Remove radioactive materials from inbound/outbound scrap material and quarantine properly
  • Perform general housekeeping duties, including sweeping the shop area and removing garbage
  • Assist in non-ferrous sorting and processing as directed by the non-ferrous operator
  • Assist co-workers in general operational duties essential to the yard's safety, efficiency, and profitability
  • Contribute to problem-solving efforts as required
