Job Summary

West Power Energy is seeking a highly skilled Senior Transmission Line Engineer to support our expanding Transmission & Distribution practice in Burnaby, BC. This hybrid role involves working some days in the office and others from home, requiring a seller-doer with strong client relationship development skills.

Technical Execution & Project Oversight

  • Design and develop transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 500kV.
  • Establish design criteria and specifications for transmission line design and procurement of materials.
  • Develop project design alternatives and corresponding cost estimates.
  • Lead design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Conduct independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based on PLS-CADD.
  • Stay updated on industry codes and standards and have experience as the technical lead on projects.
  • Prepare construction documents, including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation and assembly drawings, as Engineer of Record.
  • Prepare specifications and project design criteria and provide construction support for high-voltage transmission line projects.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, analyze, and design a variety of transmission line projects, primarily with utilities and other types of projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Report directly to a Project Engineer or Project Manager and have primary transmission line project planning, analysis, and design responsibilities.
  • Have a solid understanding of transmission line project scope & deliverables and be able to identify scope creep and provide immediate input and coordinate with the Project Engineer or Project Manager to remedy the situation.
  • Coordinate with engineers and technical staff to ensure that the projects' needs are met in a timely and effective manner.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, clients, and the rest of the design disciplines.
  • Lead meetings with clients, other stakeholders, and contractors to review project needs and coordinate field conditions.
  • Write and edit technical reports and engineering studies.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and design packages for transmission line projects.
  • Produce technical presentations and design drawings.
  • Perform detailed studies, review plans, transmission line modeling, and design tasks associated with utilities or other types of projects, under the supervision of a project manager.
  • Support construction projects with field site visits and construction observation duties, responding to RFIs.
  • Certify that company design practices are followed as they relate to their Practice/Discipline deliverables, and they act as a focal point for the company Project Practice/Discipline Team Members.
  • Schedule and coordinate peer reviews of said tasks, including third-party Practice/Discipline quality reviews of deliverables.
  • Perform quality reviews for transmission projects, including using design-specific tools such as PLS-CADD PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE.
  • Support the project manager and group proposal manager to prepare proposal man-hour estimates and technical scopes to support the sales effort.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to the transmission engineering department, mentoring, and guiding less experienced engineers.
  • Approve and stamp designs and drawings and serve as EOR (Engineer of Record).

Qualifications

Required

  • Hold a degree in civil or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Have minimum 7 years of experience in transmission line design and field transmission construction.
  • Proficient in English with strong speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Hold Professional Engineer Licensure.
  • Have advanced working knowledge of PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER.
  • Have advanced working knowledge of GO95, NESC, and Wildfire Mitigation (a plus).
  • Have advanced knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems/software to execute production.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Be analytical and have strong problem-solving skills.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, clients, and external agencies.
  • Be analytical, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work in a team environment and in a variety of situations while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
