Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Shift Engineer / Maintenance (Second Class) to join our team at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). As a key member of our Real Property Planning and Management Branch, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our first class heating plant.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in operating complex high-pressure steam plants, with experience in maintenance and testing, record-keeping, and responding to power or equipment failures. A valid Second Class Operating Engineer Certificate is required, and experience in gas turbine co-generation is an asset.

This is a full-time position that requires rotating 12-hour shifts, 24/7, 365 days a year. The incumbent must be able to possess and retain the physical capabilities to perform the position, including crouching, bending, twisting, walking, climbing stairs & ladders, and handling heavy and bulky objects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the first class heating plant, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Perform maintenance and testing, keeping records and responding to power or equipment failures.
  • Work under the direction of the Assistant Chief Operating Engineer on an eight hour/day Monday to Friday work week.
  • Provide shift relief for the Shift Engineers as required, sometimes on a last minute on call basis.
  • Monitor equipment and systems for other NRC buildings in the National Capital Region during quiet hours.
Requirements
  • Secondary School Diploma according to provincial standards.
  • Valid Second Class Operating Engineer Certificate issued by TSSA.
  • Significant operating experience working in a complex high-pressure steam plant.
  • Experience performing necessary maintenance and tests, keeping records and responding to power or equipment failures.
  • Basic experience preparing reports for serious problems to be addressed by maintenance as part of its corrective/preventive maintenance programs.
  • Experience operating gas turbine co-generation would be an asset.
