Estimator Job Description

As an Estimator at Michael Page International Canada Limited, you will play a crucial role in preparing preliminary budget pricing for our clients. Your responsibilities will include obtaining design drawings and sketches, developing Schedule "A", and providing specifications and drawings to sub-contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare preliminary budget pricing by obtaining design drawings and sketches, developing Schedule "A", and providing specifications and drawings to sub-contractors.
  • Develop a spreadsheet to list model types, elevations, and plans, trades, and codes, and calculate totals for all model costs, contingency totals, and a final line for the sum of both.
  • Prepare Budget Pricing (hard and soft) for use in determining sale prices of models.
  • Assist in providing take-offs for project cost estimates.
  • Prepare Contract Pricing with approved complete sets of approved working drawings, brochures, and final Schedule "A".
  • Review and compare Contract Pricing items for accuracy.
  • Prepare a Quotation Analysis spreadsheet outlining specifics and attach a cover letter for tendering packages.
  • Complete tendering packages, including cover letters, scopes of work, quotation analysis spreadsheets, and complete sets of working drawings.
  • Prepare a sub-contractor bidder list and assign numbers to each bidder.
  • Compare budget amounts to actual amounts from quotations and set up meetings with each trade.
  • Monitor budgets in regards to expiry dates and inform accounting and department heads when costs are good until and adjust costs to complete sites within budget.
  • Coding of all P.O.'s as required for sites and décor centers.

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in a construction-related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience as an Estimator in low-rise residential construction.
  • Working knowledge of Newstar.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, written and verbal.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of building contracts and tender packages.
  • Good knowledge of construction techniques and methodology.
  • Ability to work in a highly competitive market with extremely challenging targets and timelines.
  • Good knowledge base of industry-standard CCDC contract types and building codes.
  • Strong understanding of standard industry terminology, specifications, and general practices.
  • Proficiency in drawings review and general interpretation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel, including use of Macros and Formulas.
